Old Champlain Groaning
« on: Jan 29, 2013, 06:17 AM »
How about the groaning and roaring of Lake Champlain the past cold snap.    Is it just me or do the fish stop biting just before a huge roar one that throws water out of the hole your fishing in.    I think they are pretty aw some my self.   Love to watch the inexperience peoples reaction to them also.   I am kind of sick that way.

Webster, even the experienced still get unnerved by this. :)
I was out near Burton this past Friday by myself as I was trying to avoid the tip up pike gang in Hathaway. Figured I could jig perch without pike and the augers messing things up.
Anyhow, there was lots of snap, crackle popping, but when a large pressure crack developed behind me about 50 yards away, that rattled me...I moved in closer to Kill Kare's boat launch then.
Ironic part is that perch we not biting out in deeper water, even though I was marking some suspended about 4 feet off the bottom they wouldn't bite minnows, spikes, eyes or plastics. When I moved into 20 FOW near the boat launch there was much less ice noise and the perch were biting but they were all dinks less than 8"
I do wonder if the ice noise scares off the slabs.

On Saturday I heard the racket on Lapan's Bay, I think it was the ice shifting after the wind shifted from South to North.
