Spearing in dirty water
« on: Jan 28, 2013, 07:28 PM »
We have always speared in about 12 ft of water on a super clear lake. And we are moving are house to a different lake were there is only about 3-5 ft of clarity. So we will be in about 4 5ft of water.

My question to you guys is... what color decoy would work the best in bad water clarity? Size? live? maybe smelt? any thoughts would be great!! thanks!!

For me dirty means bigger red and white. I spent lots of time years ago on Lake Of The Woods spearing. Some years five foot would have been welcomed. We started with slicing up potatoes for the bottom but the fish seemed to shy away. Then I just started using a bigger red and white and other than some eye strain I could see good enough.

We finally stopped going up there when the slot came about and with the varying water conditions there was too much chance for mistakes.

I'm not talking super big but like 12". I also try to keep decoy movement fairly slow. Good luck, dirty water is tough.

I've had luck with a hot/fluorescent orange in dirty water and also something with a glo paint/coating on it.
Slow action seems to be better too.
