Rainbows?
« on: Jan 06, 2013, 08:22 PM »
I saw a picture of the rainbow that someone posted earlier and didnt want to hijack the thread.

I was wondering if there are lakes around the marquette area that you can target some rainbows in?  I really want to try and land one through the ice some day!

Do you guys just use jigs and wax worms?

Thanks everybody

Fish in the upper part of the water column at little shag....theres lots o f rainbows in there!   Usually atleast see a couple get caught everytime i go there.  Jiggin for gills last week i had a mark up high and watched it shoot straight down and slammed my gill pill. Also had a mark up high and reeled my jig up to it and it got slammed.  Both rainbows....not big but nice pretty ones!  Setup tipups a few feet below the ice around you and jig for gills.  Caught some bass too!

Where abouts on little shag? Would love to catch trout thru the ice. I have pretty hit or miss luck on trout thru the ice (a few lakers and steelhead not much else).

18" 4-6 lb floro leader ....1 sinker...treble hook.   Or ill put a swedish pimple body to connect the main line to the leader and its the weight/attracter.   Kinda getting away from that though....dont like the idea of a fish that slams the pimple and doesnt get a hook in its mouth..lol

Thanks for the insight buddy. Small chubs and shiners for bait?

4lb flouro. Small single hook (easier to release fish if they are not big enough) and just enough sinkers to keep the minnow down. Rainbows like to cruise just under the ice especially when there is snow on the ice so I mainly fish anywhere between 1-5 feet and set one half way down and adjust accordingly. Wigglers also work quite well.  Sometimes I like to use a 2 hook set-up and run a small minnow on one and a wiggler on the other. As far as spawn, It works good on the big lake fishing steelhead with set rods or tip-ups but can't really see the benefit on inland lake rainbows. But, I have never tried it so it may work.

Just put some stink on the hook....sometimes a perch eye will catch more fish then wigglers and waxies.  Those rainbows seem so agressive i think they will eat anything.  Splake too!!

Try out Lake Angeline in Ishpeming. There's just about every type of fish you want to catch through the ice in there.

Ya, your right. I saw your effort last year... ;D

In all seriousness it pretty much sucks now. 1,345 people/snowmobiles/wheelers and few fish.
