Help a WI boy out... Devils Lake info
« on: Feb 17, 2013, 07:45 PM »
Well my father-in-law and I are planning on doing a fishing trip this year and Devils Lake has been the name being thrown out there. How's the bite been this year and would you have any recommendations for a first timer?

Obviously not looking for any honey holes, or anything like that. Just would like to get on some fish and put a little fish in our bellies while we're out there. For what's it's worth we're very respectful fishermen and would be very appreciative of any info. Feel free to PM if you'd like :)

I hope someone from the Devils Lake area will help you out but locals seem to be very tight lipped about that area. On another website that goes by the short name of FB, blood was threatened to be spilled of people posting accurate and honest fishing report on the fishing reports forum. Yes, that is a true statement, I saw the flaming posts myself before they were locked and deleted.
You might try Ed's Bait shop at 701-662-8321 or Woodland Resort at 701-662-5996 or Pete's Bait shop at 701-662-8033 or Fredrick's Bait shop at 701-662-4486. A few members on here have made trips there could help you out. So if you put this topic up on the main board you might get a few responses.

Thanks for the leads. I will certainly check those out.

Not sure if I'll get out there this year to verify, but last year out of Minnewaukan my bil and I had really good luck along the sunken road north of town.

I think the consensus is this has been the best ice fishing season in a long time in the Devils Lake area.  I'd be looking at March as a great time to be there.  Woodland Resort is a nice place to stay, and they have a good guide service too.  Lots of water to look at in the main lake, and some of the best fishing is often found on the smaller lakes around the big lake-  Pelican, Stump, and Irvine.   You can get a pretty good feel for how the bite by watching the various resorts and guides websites and Facebook pages.

Best of Luck on your trip to North Dakota!  Jim Carroll  NPAA #13

Thanks a lot Jim! We're looking at Mid-March. As you mentioned, fishing Devil's Lake feels a little daunting since there is so much water to cover. Always stink to drive a ways, then spend a day or day and a half looking for fish when you're limited on time frame. Will definitely check out those other lakes as well. Thank you again!
