North vt burbot?
« on: Jan 08, 2013, 01:31 PM »
I live in Milton vt and I've been interested in catching burbot. I've never seen one, eaten one or even tried to catch them. I'm looking for information on how to catch them and where I should go (that is close to home) to fish for them. Any help would be much appreciated!

If you do a google search, there's a great video about Burbot fishing in VT. I just watched it the other day. Sorry, but I don't have the link.

do a search here in the VT section..  You want one, go to Willoughby.  Dead smelt works best, but most bait will work, on the bottom fished at night on a tip up.  You will get all you want that way.
Silly rookies, traps are for animals!!  Tilts are for kids!!  Fishermen use tip ups!

you can cook them any way any other fish is cooked but my preferred method is boil them in chunks for a few minutes then dump out the water in the pan and add butter and saute with a little old bay seasoning ...i prefer it over most other fish

just to add to the dead bait on bottom at night,  these fish (in my experience) dont trip flags so walk around and give a tug to each line. if you set a good spread you can at least keep moving in the cold all night walking from tip up to tip up. good luck! great eating fish. also, if at all possibly try not to let them freeze as they seem to lose some firmness (easier said than done)
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there would be a shortage of fishing poles.

fishinaround, same thing happened to us, first time out no flags for the first hour so we went out to check tip ups, between the two of us 14 out of 16 tipups had fish on, not a flag tripped.
