Flasher Help
« on: Dec 27, 2012, 10:31 PM »
I was lucky enought to get a MarCum LX3TC for Christmas from my lovely wife.  I've never fished with a flasher before.  I took it out today.  I'm having a hard time adjusting the gain.  I could see my jig, but one time specifically, I could see the jig, could not see a fish, but got a bite and caught the fist.

Now a flasher can't do everything, but I'm guessing I need to play around a bit before I get the hang of it.  Any tips would be helpful.  I read the owner's manual cover to cover and thought I did what it said....guess not.

I've watched buddy use a flasher and it worked great- but I didn't pay attention to how he set his up.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks all,

Keith

Thanks.  I just watched it also.  I think I need to use it more also to get the hang of it.  It was really interesting to watch it.  But, without knowing how to use it, it becomes a real expensive depth finder.

I used mine for the first time last weekend. I also still need to fine tune, but I did catch 2 fish by bringing my lure up to the fish.

I can see a micro jig in 40 feet of water, watch a waxworm drift down to the bottom, and any fish that comes in is unmistakable, play around with it some more, once you get it dialed in you will love it.

I have the Marcum LX3TC as well.  I absolutely love the unit.

Here's how I work mine.

I adjust the gain when I first set up so that the bottom shows red.  There is usually a little bit of green or yellow above the red giving me some indication of plant matter or similar on the bottom.

From there I get my gear ready and drop my line down the hole.  From this point I will further fine tune my gain.  I generally always turn it down as far as I can.  So when I have a tear drop or similar on I turn it down or up until my lure is the finest yellow line I can get.  If I change lures or baits to something bigger without adjusting gain, I will expect my yellow line to be thicker...from there I will once again turn it down until my bait is a fine yellow line that remains on the screen (sometimes when the gain is down the lure will fade in and out as you jig it.)

If you set yours as I've described you shouldn't have any surprise fish bite ya.  Also, make sure that your transducer is down far enough that it sits below the ice and points directly down.
