Lipless cranks
« on: Dec 22, 2012, 07:28 AM »
Anyone using lipless cranks to target eyes.  I'm not talking about chubby/lindy darters but open water cranks
I only have a few for open water and have had limited succes. Not sure if it was a technique issue or not aggressive fish.

Live Targets can be great for attracting near a deadline. And if the fish are aggressive catching as well

LIVETARGETS come with a hefty price tag. Might have to pick some up.

I sure find the most expensive lures work the bet  ;D

Lures will catch more fishermen than fish! ;D

My friends and I use a lipless rattle, to "call" the fish in when it gets slow.  Does it really work?  Not sure.  I use lipless rattles from LT, I have plenty, and I have caught a 22" eye on the way down!  Other guys tip the hook with a minnow and have caught hogs.  Maybe it's a combination of rattle and scent that attracted the eyes.  I find that it becomes more of a thing to do when catching is slow.

In the end, I do think they work but not as well as a jig head and live minnow (if allowed).  The only way you satisfy your curiosity is to buy one for yourself.  Go in and look at the lures and pick the one that best represents the bait fish in your area.  Then there is size...too many options.

BTW - Green is bad, Blue and Gold is better.  ;)

Rattle Traps and Rattle n' Rapalas are too loud under the ice most of the time... IMO.

They work awesome in the summer though!

The super loud rattle under the water is better is will definitely attract fish if they r around and especially active. The aggressive fish will take the rap but if the fish come in and don't bite drop down a jig and minnow and bam

I beat this idea to death.... it works less than 10% of the time. It works about 30% of the time with a bigger chubby darter for walleyes. Jig the darter with a live shiner about 4' away under a bobber. They can hear that darter from a long way off.

Calling fish in is seldom a good tactic anyway. Going to them will produce much better in most cases.

I am not sure about the walleyes, but pike sure like the lipless cranks through the ice.
I have caught both pike and walleye during the open water season on the lipless cranks.
The rippin rap was particularly effective this open water season, so I feel it should be OK for ice fishing too.

Like you guys have said the lipless cranks will at least call the fish to your location and if they don't go for it, they may go for a more calm bait nearby.
It's the passive, aggressive approach,lol. ;)

canadian wiggler does come in rattle option, use underwater camera - dance/jump it off bottom but have someone else there to pull up camera quickly as it is good for tangled mess

Don't use them for walleye but use them when fishing for pike, seem to get most action on them late ice for my experience

I got one eye last year on a rattlin rap at lml. Then I tied on a buckshot and caught sixteen more. I wouldn't bother with the lipless cranks. Only one fish during an aggressive bite sucks.
Still counting.....
