Brookings are ice conditions
« on: Nov 25, 2012, 12:24 PM »
Just got back from a drive around the area.

Goldsmith - Completely iced over except for an area on the north side where the geese are keeping it open. Ice is less than an inch thick

Sinai - Almost completely open, even the bays on the west side.

East 81 - Mix of open and iced over. maybe 50% ice covered.

West 81 - Just looked from HWY 81. Mix of open and iced over in the bays. Main lake open.

Brush - Southern 1/3 covered with less than 1 inch of ice. Rest of lake is a mix of ice and open.

Poinsett - Open

Albert - 50% ice cover. Large group of Snow Geese roosting here. Probably keep an area open later than the rest of the lake.

St. John - Completely iced over with less than an inch of ice.

Supposed to get down to 13 tonight and a high of 26 tomorrow. I will be out on some of the iced over spots come Tuesday, even if I have to strap 2x8's to my feet.

Made it out for a couple hours this morning on Goldsmith. Roughly 3 inches of ice but did not venture too far out. Felt good to be out.

Oh, and GO JACKS!!!

After driving around this evening I think the best thing that could happen would be for the lakes to open up and we start over again. Very poor quality ice everywhere I checked.

I checked a few lakes out on Friday and Brush, the 81's, Sinai, and Goldsmith were all open when the snow ended Friday afternoon. Haven't been back out that way to check since, but I am hoping that the lakes did not freeze over Friday night into Saturday or else we might have some problems. If the lakes did cap over on Friday night into Saturday hopefully there wasn't much ice and it will just sink from the weight of the snow or this wind will break it up and push it to shore.

It was too windy in Sioux Falls for anything around here to ice over, which was great given Sunday's snow.  How are things looking around Brookings?

Quite a few wheelers out on the lakes now. Lakes that were iced over when the snow hit have roughly 6 inches of ice, 3 good ice, 3 frozen slush. The only lake in the area that I found that did not have any frozen slush that I found has been Sinai, and it had 3.5 inches of good clear ice out from the landing as of yesterday. Conditions are very good overall and the fishing has been as well.
