By distance from Appeldoorn's

4 miles ... Johnson's Portside would be the closest; it is a pretty good bait an tackle store for a gas station type store.
5 miles ... Pat's in Isle is also good for a small bait store type store.
18 miles ... Reeds in Onamia is a little farther away, but will have more of the big store selection; if you go there, Meleens (BP station) and Lundeens Tackle Castle are also great places.  These three stores are all within three blocks of each other.

35 miles ... Prince Bait on Hwy 169, five miles N of Milaca.  In my opinion, this is the BEST place for "Mille Lacs specific" tackle.

It was probably the Owatonna Cabelas where you guy's stopped. Here's the direction's from the Cabela web site!
  I-35 (From the South)

Traveling north on I-35, take exit #45 "To Clinton Falls".
From off-ramp, turn left (west) onto NW 46th St.
Turn left (south) on West Frontage Road and go 1/2 mile, Cabela’s will be on the right side.

Cabela's also has another store located in Rogers,MN. That one is located at the intersection of Mn Hi-way 169 and I-94. Hope this helps. :icefish:DIRTBALL2 ;)2

I am pretty much gonna echo desperado...  I would like to add that I have been a regular at Prince since I rode my bike there. I rode the school bus with the current owners too! ;D They are THE Mille Lacs bait shop. Otherwise, Reeds has a great selection of tackle and Lundeens has the liveliest bait. I avoid Meleens, but they are the only 24 hour store for at least 40 miles.

Lots of good advice.

Lundeens and Prince are my favorites, but Lundeens is on the SW side of the lake and Prince is south of the lake, and Appledoorns is on the E side, so unless you are driving up Hwy 169 they probably won't be very convenient for you.    Meleens and Reeds are places I avoid.

Tutt's is another top-notch bait shop, but they are on the NW side of the lake so probably also no help for you.

Portside will be the closest to Appledoorns and they're okay, the bait is fine although their selection of tackle is not the biggest.  I stopped at a bait shop in Isle this summer, I assume it was Pat's .... if so, the guy running the place was great.  Not a very big shop and I have no idea how his winter tackle selection will be.
