Hard Luck....let it begin
« on: Nov 10, 2012, 04:17 AM »
Got out for my hard water opener with Sapper27 today. Hard Luck it was, 4 inches of clear ice over 120 feet of water. Marked a few fish, finally teased one up from around 70 feet that slammed my offering. Arctic Char, healthy and about 30 inches in length. Fish was released after photo. Marked and missed another fish at about 90 feet. Only 1 fish to the surface after about 9 hours between the both of us. It was hard luck for one angler and hard luck for one char. The earlist I have been out on the lake to start a new season. Good Luck and be safe.

Void of the Invasion, no shanty town erected yet (This lake is not for the weak...keep moving down the Hwy)

Almost 4 inches over 120 feet...were good!

Season Opener (I think its a char...arctic char)

Nice fish.  Just curious but does it matter if it is 4" of ice over 120' or 10' of water?  I am only 5'10". ;D  Either way we have 0" over all water right now, kind of depressing.
A watched lake never freezes.

I can see what your refering to after reading it again ;D

However, I was making reference to what depth we were at so other interested locals in the AK Interior would know. As you may know already...ice freezes up faster over shallower depths, hence my original post. This lake is about 145 at its deepest. At the time of my post areas of the lake with deep depths had overflow and unstable ice. Just did not want anyone thinking we were in the 130-140 area.

The ice is stable now anywhere on the lake, we have had temps of -30's the last couple weeks and its a good 10 inches in the middle over 130-140. I was out today and fished 11-12 inches of ice over 135 feet of water. My buddy had 17 inches over 120 where he was fishing on the lake today.
