A good one though - the rod is 36", so I guesstimate 33".

You got it, cuz.  Northern on a tip-up.  The beadchain and button are right in front of the fish.  It literally was set that deep.  The pike came from a kettle pond, which runs about 20-22' in the middle, and has steep bowl-shaped sides, with a tiny shelf around it that runs 2-3' deep.  The pattern there is to set up on that shelf, or just off of it, and vary depths from practically in the hole to 5' down.
