ice shack tongue weight (pop up camper conversion)
« on: Nov 29, 2012, 06:44 PM »
I have a pop up conversion I was looking for any ideas on how to reduce the tongue weight. When I put it on my atv it just about bottoms out. 2011 brute force 750. I already cranked up the springs on the shocks. I was thinking of welding a snowmobile ski to the trailer tongue. Anyone got any easier or better ideas? It doesnt look like it, but it is almost bottomed out in the picture. The shack tows really good at 60 mph with my truck, so i'm not looking to modify the trailer, like axels of longer tongue. I just dont want to hurt the atv.

Its a lot of work, but you could move your axle forward. Or have a fat friend ride in the very back. Personally I like the added wight on mine, it helps the chains dig in better.

Move axle forward, or if its Just being transported short distance modify a trailer tire in place of the trailer jack but make it swivel. Kinda makin the shanty into a 3 wheeler

Da Man Cave Shack is right.  I use an enclosed trailer as an iceshack and it also squats the back of my atv.  So we pack all our gear in the back foot or two of the trailer.  Acts as a counterbalance and makes the tongue lighter. Kinda Polish engineering but it works. ;D

When I move mine with the wheeler ( Polaris 700 ) I get very little squat ! I also enclosed the tongue frame on mine ( it's where the woodstove sits ) I also pack all the gear to the back . I have considered adding a third wheel just haven't worked it out in my head .

I put my two batteries and the solar panels towards the back...that helped.  Something else that's simple is to do is to take off the full lp tank off the tongue and put it inside towards the back of the shack while it's on the wheeler.

I think id have more of a rigid hookup to the wheeler for towing it would suck to have to slow down quick and have it slam into the back of you, could do something as easy as have some pipe that would slide over the safety chains and hook to the wheeler with a caribeener that screws together so it has some movement just my .02
