new shanty
« on: Nov 24, 2012, 03:30 PM »
just need to waterproof the luan.  I am going to try the rubber spray that comes in a can.  I made it so I can take the walls and roof off within 5 minutes to lighten it up to get it off the ice easier if needed.  It will weigh in around 1300lbs and the wheeler around 600lbs.  going to need a solid 5 inches of black ice to get it out there safe.  I left the seats on the interior so I can spend some overnights in comfort this year.

here is the before pic.
the roof was rotten so I had to build a new one but left the crank to lower it still in the case that I have to take it off to lighten it up.

do not need holes in the floor for the sacandaga reservoir.  your arm will fall off before you jig up a fish in that lake.

I will have extra keys for it if you ever want to use it.  No need to even put tip ups in,  I usually don't catch anything anyways but you will stay warm and your beer won't freeze.

I rebuilt a boat and used a ton of epoxy in the last few years.  http://clarkcraft.com/ has a great epoxy for wood and plywood as it flexes very well without becoming brittle.$60/gal and you can cover the whole shack with that and paint over it for color(black with flames i think would be cool but that's me).  if you want the exposed lauan to last without delaminating you are going to have to protect it VERY well.good luck and it looks great.
If life were easy everybody would have one.

thanks, I will look into that.  i am not sure how well the rustolium rubber spray works, epoxy might be the trick.

5 inches of ice for all that weight seems a bit risky my shanty weighs around 500-600 and im waiting for 8 inches to be safe
It's not that fishing is so important, it's just that so many things in life are so much less important

probably wait for at least 6-7" of black ice.  I can pull my shanty out all but the last 50 yards with only being over top of 3 fow.  there is a sand bar that I follow out.

Add a generator, satellite dish, a flat screen, and a beer tap, and voila! "Hello Superbowl Party :)  Could paint with appropriate team colors which would be anybody but Jets.

Great rig, but if you don't have tire chains for the wheeler I would recommend them. Here is a link to the best pair I have found. HUGE DIFFERENCE!!

those are some pricey chains and plus I drive the wheeler down the road a half mile to get to the lake when I am too lazy to trailer it.  I have skis that I drive the shanty tires onto if there is too much snow for the wheels.  I also know someone with a utv with tracks on it if I really get in trouble moving it.

Gotcha. Yeah, those chains definitely have a price tag on them compared to others, but they seem worth it to me. I would love to have a UTV with tracks, you'll be all set if he can help.

another option is tire studs. they are far cheaper, easy to install, never have to be tightened and they bite like hell. we switched to studs over chaions a couple years ago and our zuki went way further then anyone else at the 2010 horne pond derby pulling a shack and a full jet sled behind that and three guys!!! 8" of slush w/ about a foot of snow on top of that!
