set up for bass and pike?
« on: Nov 18, 2012, 07:46 PM »
so i have been thinking about putting new tackle on my tip ups for bass and pike. any advice? beads and blades? red hooks vs normal hooks? size of hook? should i go with steel leaders? and most importantly treble hooks or single? i have done a lot of tip up fishing for bass and pike but am wondering if some different tackle on the end of the line would make a difference? what do you suggest when targeting both these fish?

For me it depends how i'll fish for pike.  I rarely get any bass under the ice up here, but I wish i did.

If i am fishing some stained water i feel like i can get away with leaders more.  On those lakes i'll use a red leader. Some of the clearer lakes i'll throw on some fluorcarbon with a quick strike rig, but then again you'll get a few more bite offs compared to a steel leader.  I like treble hooks, either red or glow colors. Colorado Blades i like chartreuse, and orange.  Beads,  red and any color can work at times.@)
Pike are underrated.
Practice catch and release.

I sometimes will tie a spoon like a red devil etc above my live bait 12 to 16 inches, then as the bait is swimming the spoon will flash from the movement of the bait

For pike I like trebel hooks on a steel leader tied direct to line, but for bass I like to use single hooks as it seems they like to spit it more often when they feel the trebel hooks.

What about depth of bait?    Does it make a differance? I fish in 1-10ft of water so i understand if you are fishing in 50ft you may have to get the bait down there. Any one else fish 1-10ft and what depth? I also like to tail hook i have noticed the bait will constantly try to swim to the bottom so has great action others tell me this is wrong, thoughts/suggestions?

I do very well on Largemouth Bass here in Southern Vermont...I set up on weed edges in 10 to 12 feet of water. I scout and mark these on a gps before ice up. For set up on tip ups: LONG LEADERS....10 feet of 10 lb test, a single split shot and a eagle claw #42 in a size 4 to 8 depending on size of bait...with this setup I do get pike BITE OFFS....

Not much pike experience, but I have the bass figured out pretty well.  I use 3ft of 20lb Seaguar fluoro for a leader with a small split shot weight.  Some say 20lb is too heavy, but with pickerel in the equation, it holds up better and I always inspect it for frays after catching a pick.  I've never had a break-off, either.  Red gammy octopus hooks (not too big), and hook the shiner in front of the dorsal.  Liveliest shiners work best.  One foot off the bottom is money, unless you're over weeds - otherwise drop it down to just above the weeds (not in them).  I look to stay in about 6-8 fow relatively close to shore -- along a weedline is perfect.  I set up my tip-ups in a line parallel to the shore and catch the pigs as they cruise along.  Hope it helps, and good luck!

My biggest bass through the ice was 8.3lb and came out of 4ft of water, so you never know. Edges of weed beds are always a great place to fish, even under the ice. I have been very happy with quick strike rigs for a couple decades and use them when ever its legal. When I get a flag and feel the fish at the end of the line, 90%+ of the time I hook the fish and almost always in the lips for a easy release. Also when I get to the tilt and pick up the line, if I feel a fish, I set the hook. No waiting, no guessing, I just set the hook and get the fish. I use double Ryder hooks for my rigs and that is the way they started out in England (for pike), were almost all fishing is catch and release. For leader Mat. Most of the time I use Seaguard Fluorocarbon in the 10lb range for bass, for pike 40lb.

I guess I am the odd ball here because I dont use any leader and instead tie the 50# dacron right to the hook. I started doing this years ago when I noticed that the fish would many times get distracted by the swivel. Never had issues catching pike or bass when rigging this way.

When I do need a thin leader (smaller fish) I usually use a surgeons knot to put that together rather than using a swivel.

I don't normally use a swivel and if I did it would be about 8 ft away (above) the bait... I have seen the fluorocarbon make a difference to many time to not use it. If tying straight to the Dacron works for you, great, I know I could use a shoe lace with a safety pin and a hot dog and will still catch some fish, but I want to use every advantage that I can.

X2.
Using leaders is hands down better -- UNI-to-UNI knot if u don't like swivels.  I personally prefer using swivels because it prevents the bait from twisting the line to hell.  But hey, to each his own!

Ford bass and pike on the same setup get some Flurocarbon leader material in whatever pound test you want. The leader material is stiffer and tougher than regular Flurocarbon fishing line so it is better to use in this application. It is good to make up some leaders ahead of time so you can change them out quick if a pike knicks it up. You can rig up some leaders with different sized hooks, beads and etc also if you want change.

I guess it depends on what you are fishing for. I have never seen a Pike cut through a dacron line but have seen plenty lost on leaders that were not wire. When I see guys using wire leaders, they are always the ones complaining about not catching pike. Generations of Pike fishermen tied on directly as do I and so far so good.... with no losses to show for it.

Trout?, Panfish?... sure, I wouldn't even think of not using a leader but I dont fish for trout or panfish normally and when I do I use a rod with 4# test so leader is not required. Trying Walleye for the first time this year and for them I am using a leader for sure.

Guess I should have qualified my target fish before mentioning my choice of not using a leader. Funny how I am so one track minded when it comes to ice fishing..... everyones talking about Pike right?  ::) ;D

I personally changed my set up for this up coming season. Trying bead on the leaders, and also using trebles. I use swivels to also cut down on line twist.
Chance is always powerful. Let your hook be always cast in the pool where you least expect it, there will be a fish.
