Go Pro cameras

Has anyone tried to lower the camera into the water with the new WI FI addition so you can view what is going on at the same time?

I have a similar video sports cam with Wifi and thought about doing the same thing. Trick will be to rig it so it stays upright and control the direction. It would be cool to see and record your presentation and how the fish react, and checking out structure.

I did this in open water this summer,  I had the camera mounted to a telescoping pole and took footage of bringing fish to the boat.   Worked well but you definitely need the dive housing and the anti fog inserts.   I was getting fogging in the summer under the water so I can only imagine what it will be like in the winter, these gopro's run really hot.

The dive housing made the under water pics a lot better.  My only other thought for the winter would be lighting.

Does Wifi work underwater? I know a guy who holds his go pro in his hand and leans over the boat and aims it at the fish. Also hooks it too his fishing line and sends it down in the Gulf. I will tell you it works good but the video is shaky. I like my camera with a cable so I can aim it at our baits and relax. Horizontal not straight down. May buy one of the new color cameras now that the price is lower. I am still having a hard time with the fact they don't record the action without extras. Half of the fun is showing people, who don't understand what we do on the ice, all of the fish underneath the ice.

I haven't tried controlling the camera with the wifi under water yet,  but with the distance 600' you can control it out of water I have to imagine it will work 10-20' under water if you have the remote above water.

Back to the original post though, to be clear the App is not yet released from GoPro that goes with the Wifi.  The app is what will allow you to view on a smart device what the camera is seeing.  They have delayed the release of this app numerous times and currently is listed as Fall 2012, but who knows.

Without the App, the Wifi and remote just give you control of the camera remotely but no real time viewing at the moment.

I will be using the GoPro just for doing some filming under water, i would not use it as a replacement for my Marcum camera, but I could see it would be a nice alternative to check structure etc without having to buy a more expense Marcum.

Here is a video I made for my boss. He brought me still pictures from an SD card. I found out the guy he was with had the Go Pro. After watching his Video I recorded it with my Ipad from my Flatscreen tv using my PS3 on youtube. This way my boss's trip video could have some action instead of just still pictures with fade and zoom.

From Gulf of Mexico off of Florida.

So the Go Pro can work for some nice shots, but I don't think I would use one for Icefishing.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

I just bought an HD2 with the handlebar mount, mounted it to my bow, I'm gonna try and kill something with the camera on this year. Oughta be pretty sweet. Only thing I'd do is if you plan on using the camera for actual filming with sound necessary I found a video on youtube that talks about a microphone you can pick up on ebay for like $6 but you have to have the Skeleton case for it in order to use the mic. Sound quality is WAY better with the mic plugged in.

This isn't my video but here is an ice fishing video taken with a go pro.

Some of the video is from under the ice.
