Polk County Ice report
« on: Dec 08, 2012, 02:51 PM »
I wanted to go out today and check the ice on a couple of lakes before the snow comes tonight and screws it up. I was pretty disappointed. We had a dusting of snow last night so it was real easy to tell when the ice was open or weak. I never even got out of the car with the ice bar. All the lakes I checked had obvious open water and\or spots with water seeping up through the snow close to shore. Although there were two guys standing out about 50 feet from shore on the north end of poplar, none of these lakes were even worth getting out the car for. They are predicting almost 6 inches of snow for tonight and tomorrow, I’m guessing it will be at least several weeks before we get decent ice.

The lakes I checked were;
Sand 187 acres
Deer 807 acres (this always freezes up late because of the springs by the only landing)
Loveless 141 acres
Poplar 125 acres

Man we are getting killed here, 6” on the ground and 6 more predicted before the end of the day.  I was hoping the weather terrorists were wrong as usual but it looks like they were not only right, but under predicted. Is it wrong to pray the lakes go back to open water to get rid of this snow? I don’t ever remember that happening before. A foot of snow on 1-2” of ice can only mean it will be February until I can taste some perch. Damn.
