Finishing new Tip-Ups
« on: Feb 10, 2013, 08:07 PM »
When finishing new, raw wood tip-ups, what is the best thing to seal the wood with.  I plan on staining the wood and i was going to spray automotive clear coat on them, but was wondering if something else might be better.  Thanks.

I would think a good brush on polyurethane like Minwax would work just fine.

Spar is a good choice. I use it on my traditional snowshoes and it protects very well. Post some pictures of them when you are finished.

if you have the time to wait between coats. this is my favorite recipe. done once it will last for years and years.
mix equal parts of
100% tongue oil
boiled linseed oil
spar varnish
allow at least 12 hours dry time between coats. 2 coats is  sufficient lightly sanding between coats
