Garmin Lake maps
« on: Nov 24, 2012, 05:27 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has lake maps on there garmins.  I am looking to buy an SD card for my etrex 20 but not sure what to get.  Anyone have any ideas?  I'm looking for something with contuor lines and such. I live in Nebraska so any thing with nebraska and south dakota, or the upper mid west would be great.

I've been using the Recreation & Hot Spots Maps for my Etrex Legend for many years now. They have very good detail for the lakes that I fish here in the midwest. I also make a trip to Canada every fall and use it in my Garmin GPS/fishfinder  extensively on the 68,000 acre lake we fish. This set of maps allows me to pinpoint the Walleye spots that  we target and also track the 7 mile trip to and from even in very dense fog. I also own a Lowrance H20 with the same map chip and use this for our ice fishing trips at least once a week. I have the Navionics maps on my Ipad and they are nowhere near as detailed as the Rec. & Hot Spots maps. There will no doubt be some that will disagree with what I am telling you, but I can only say what my 7-8 years experience with these products has taught me. I don't believe you will be disappointed with these maps as they are as detailed and accurate as they paper maps that they sell. Let us know what you decide and what your experiences are with whatever you choose.

Good Luck and Good Fishing

if you're talking about buying the SD card for your car GPS, save your money. I bought it from my and the roads are way off, and there's no way to correct them, I have not been able to go out onto the ice to see if the contours are any good. One thing nice about it is it shows where the launches are. When I find that launch and lock it in. I have to go back to the regular maps to find the right roads get their.

I have a Garmin Quest with the Hot Spots and the local lake is off by about 30 yards to the west. I'll be standing about 30 yards off shore and the map shows me on land. I know it's a small lake, but c'mon. It also shows that boat ramp in a different location. I think when they originally designed the lake in the late 60's thats where they were going to put the ramp, but changed their mind and moved it to the other side of the lake. I don't take my GPS with me anymore.

Did you look at teh Upper Midwest Fishing Guide?  I am doing same debate for my new eTrex 30...i was steered towards the UMWFG rather than Garmin Lakes...haven't bought either yet, so curious to hear what you think.

Haven't used it on the ice yet but put a bunch of coordinates in from a couple lake maps and other buddies gps.  Looks like it's gonna be awesome.  The contour lines seem to be right on for the lakes and structure coordinates for a few lakes around here.  Has the contour lines for almost all the lakes I've looked for except one in the South Dakota glacial lakes area.  Heading up there after the first but hopefully will hit the ice her the day after Christmas and will be able to tell ya what I think then.  I think I'm gonna love it thou.  I never looked at the UMFG at all so I can't tell ya anything about that.  The Garmin Lake map has all the Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota minus 1 & North Dakota lakes I fish on it so went with it.

No man they don't, they only have it as updated as the game and parks have theirs.
