frozen eyelets on fishing rod
« on: Feb 25, 2005, 07:38 AM »
What is the best method of keeping the eyelets from freezing up on my rod? I'm tired of breaking the ice with my fingers and putting the tip in my mouth. I have a shanny, but I'd rather fish outdoors. The eyelets on my pole are quite large.

The mouth method is best. Just don't bite your line!  ;D

Thanks guys for the suggested responses. Someone told me to use a lite spray of 556. Has anyone tried this?

Make sure that 556 doesn't weaken monofilament, WD 40 does!

Suck 'N' Spit! Easiest way. I also have a few rods at hand and when the bail and spool ice up too much I grab one of the others and shove the frozen one in my jacket to thaw. It works pretty well and keeps me fishin 8)

I use Blakemore spray reel lube and it works well. You may have to spray the guides every once in a while but it helps a lot.

Don't spray anything on your line...you're asking for trouble.
I haven't found anything to keep them from freezing that dosen't get wiped onto the line and then onto your reel. Some lubes will not only weaken your line but it gums up on your spool and can mess up a good bite when your line falls apart.
When my ultralight freezes up I either keep it clean by warming it in my mouth or just switch to a stick with larger guides.

Instead of the suck and spit method, i just dip the rod tip into the water for a few seconds, which softens the ice making it easy to bust off.

One solution is to try the new Rapala 'Vibro Sonic' ice rod.  It has 3 AAA batteries in the handle and gently vibrates through the whole blank while emitting a high-pitched ultrasonic squeal that shatters the ice from the guides. Look for it to be released on April 1st of this year! :D
