I am from the Rolla Saint John area and there are afew grocery stores and hardware stores around here that carry smelt. I usually use ones that are 4 to 8 inches long i was on the lake yesterday talking to some guys and they where fishing with 4 inch smelt and were having real good luck and there was a few guys using bigger smelt and catching good fish to. :icefish:
we the willing lead by the unknowing have done the imposible for the ungreatful for so long we are now able to do anything with nothing. Auther unknown

Cashwise in Fargo has BIG smelt in meat freezer section.  You can also get it at Gander, Scheels (maybe).  Basically, most grocery stores have some form.  Personally, i prefer the use of Herring for Pike.  You can buy that around Devils Lake.  I'm not sure about where you are.  I prefer 5 - 8 inch dead baits but i'm fishing Devils Lake area where the average Pike is 5 lbs +
Rippin' Lips and Taken' big sips.
