pike losing teeth
« on: Feb 21, 2012, 06:26 AM »
i heard today  that pike go through a 10-14 day stretch this time of year where their teeth. this causes them to be less aggressive, then when they get them back, they turn back on and start feeding again....anyone know anything about that? i mean i pike fish alot and never heard of this. kinda makes sense though.

What happens to the teeth of northern pike in winter? I have heard people say the fish lose their teeth in February and don't bite as often on bait. Others have said that the teeth in some fish appear to be loose at this time of year.
John Berklich, Hibbing

There's a long-standing belief, likely begun by ancient anglers in search of an excuse for their lousy luck, that northern pike lose teeth at certain times of the year. In fact, this is nothing but a fishy folk tale. According to DNR fish biologist Don Pereira, northerns may occasionally lose teeth in an unfortunate run-in with particularly tough prey or bait, but there's no evidence they do so regularly. For more on northern pike, see "For the Love of Pike" (May-June 2003).

hahahaha....i hear ya on that one!! i had a slow weekend, but i think it is 3 things.......not being right on em (although they cruise alot), being that time of year where it always seems slow, and lastly, 2 more bright blue skied days. these bluebird skies seem to have a trend this year

I love bluebird skies in february - we got 9 pike yesturday between 2 guys.   I like a steady high barometer and clear skies with a north wind for predator fish..

I noticed this yr that the fishing on sunny blue sky days for pike has been better than when it is overcast and low pressure.. Like you said Big red the sustained high pressure systems seem to be paying off
