Shappell DX 3000 Users
« on: Jan 04, 2005, 10:07 AM »
Anyone used this shanty?  I am looking at getting one.  It looks pretty nice, but in the store is different than on the ice, or trying to take it down when your fingers are froze, and the wind is blowing 40 mph.  I had an early Clam jr, and it left me with a bad opinion of portables.  Now I am kind of picky, and look at things like ease to put up, take down, noise when cold/windy, etc...

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Erik

It's a very nice two man shanty. I had a S3000 for 7-8 years and it served me well. I sold it and moved up to a S4000 for the additional room. Set up and take down are pretty easy. If pulling by hand  get the optional skis or a jet sled, it doesn't pull thru snow very well. I paint my roof support poles bright red or orange so that they are easy to see on the ice and won't be left behind.

I really like mine. Set up & tear down is a breeze. I don't get cold "anything" in mine and rarely ever need to fire up the heater when I'm in it. When I set it up I get any wind or breeze behind me and keep the door on the far end closed so the wind basically blows it full making set up up easy. Same routine for tear down. After it's set up them I drill holes and just pull it over them. Takes longer to drill the holes than it does to set up. When I bought it I did four or five set up / tear downs to get used to the routine. When the sun hits them they self heat very rapidly. Even without sun you spend most of the time with your coat / suit open to relieve over heating yourself. Sure wished I'd bought one sooner!

Have you guys had any trouble with the walls not staying attached to the base?  I was looking at that, it seemed pretty tough.

I've had mine for 4 years now and it has served me well. It is easy to put up and take down once you have done it a couple of times. I set it up a few times at home before I took in on the ice. It sets up well in the wind too. I use the wind to help. Once I have secured the shanty to something, I keep the upwind door open and the down wind door closed. This will allow the wind to lift the canvas making it very easy to setup.

I too have used the dx3000 deluxe for 5 years and it has served me well. I would reccommend the skis if you pull in snow. I like the above post about painting the center poles red or orange as i too have lost the poles twice in the last two years[ they slip out of the bottom sometimes in transit.] I usually stick them in my rod bag for safe keeping. I would highly recommend this shelter to anybody looking for a good quality unit.

what do you use to anchor it down. I just bought one easy to set up but the wind kept on blowing it over when i was not in it. i need to secure it what is the easiest way.

I've been using mine for 3 years and what I did was to drill 1/2" holes in all 4 corners and use the screw in ice anchors. You have to drill the holes far enough from the corner poles to be able to screw them in. Also if you use some washers between the anchor and the shanty it seems to help.

Just got mine this year, and love it  ;D...had gusts up to 40 MPH on the lake yesterday, and it worked great!...in that kind of wind, you really need two people to put it up and down though...USE ice anchors!

Shappell is a great company to buy from.   I bought my shappell, I believe it is a DX4000, used 2-3 years ago, and a few parts were worn out and a few things have broken.   Never once has customer service given me grief, they were told it is used but they send me replacement parts for free, and usually an extra piece or two incase it breaks again, recently the clear class material gave way and they sent me a new window for the thing.          If I buy anoither shanty in the future I sure will look at shappells.
The DX3000 looks great because if you are watching tip-ups the windows are large.
It doesn't matter if you didn't catch anything as long as you had fun.
