The Queech-weekend attack
« on: Feb 20, 2012, 05:27 PM »
Four of us hit the Queech for a weekend long attack. Left CT around 4:30am saturday and were on the water roughly around 6:00am. Quick ice check and we were off to spot #1. Got all the tip ups out and it wasnt long before the flags started popping. Few run offs but no hookups. Wasnt long before that changed and our the first of the target species(trout) was on the ice. first fish a nice fat 16" Brown. That fish put hopes into the crew that more would follow. 23 hours later over two days and that would be the only trout to come through a hole. Ohwell......the bass and pickeral kept things moving for us. Day one ended up with us in cove and most of the guys chasing flags regularly. Nice mix of bass and pickeral.
Day two: setup in the dark in a more trout feeling spot and waited for the sun to come up. Maybe a few trout run offs but none caught. I got a beautifull 4 to 5lb largie for my first flag, and also got two decent smallies in the mix but yet again the bass kept us busy for most of the day including another large 4+ towards the end of the day. was my first time there and enjoyed it. Would like to go back next year and hopefully the trout bite is better. Had fun with the boys, slept in a shady Motel............caugh t fish. We hit the Queech pretty hard in two days so it wasnt for lack of trying on the trout. They just were not cooperating at all. We tried deep, shallow, suspended over deep water. The one that was caught by one of the buds i think was just off the bottom in approx 20-30'. The jig bite was non existent with not one of us getting even a solid hit on jigs. I personally didnt put in a huge effort jigging but in a few hours usually you can find some willing panfish or something. not even a nibble on jig rods. Is that normal for this place?

later in the year the trout shut off , it can be the dead sea goes on and off like a light switch , havnt stocked many trout in the past few years , as for the gills there are a few drop offs with weed beds but they dont seam to be there this year weeds are all on the bottom laying down  and perch not as many as there use to be but if you do get them they are usually 11-14 inches and 15-25 fow on the bottom usually with tipups jigging can be slow
