  • WHAT OTHERS THINK OF ME IS NONE OF MY BUSINESS
Ok...so i was going to mount my transducer at the back of the boat with the shoot through method and then mount my vex head on the dash of the boat. Then i got to thinking. How am i going to jig at the back under the ducer and be able to turn my head and watch the vex head on the dash. Would it be better to keep the vex power head portable so that the unit can be moved around the boat for ease of viewing. I do understand most guys just use the vex as a depth/fish finder and dont try to jig below the ducer in the summer.....but it would be great to see the lure too....if the ducer was mounted in the very back corner of the boat...and then jig from that area as well. What are your thoughts on this?

For starters I recommend a wide cone, or better a duel beam. Vex makes one designed to shoot through aluminum with no interference, just saw it on their website.

I have been doing this for 2 yrs. I have a bow trolling motor and the trolling xducer mounted to it. The Vex is mounted as any fishfinder would be on the bow. i use a short rod.4 1/5 -5 ft. I jig strait down just like ice fishing. They can,t hide and its no different than ice fishing when its calm. Harder when the wind blows. For the back I have a shop vac tube that I hang of a swing out stick. The person in the back lowers his xducer down the tube and jigs of it. The tube keeps the xducer from drifting away.

Thats Why They Call It Fishing.

I had mine mounted to the bow mount trolling motor as well, it works nice there. If it is going to be your only locator you would be better off at the back of the boat. If your running a tiller, just mount the head unit in the back on the side.
