Great day on Lake manitoba
« on: Feb 16, 2005, 05:29 PM »
Blue Igloo picked me up at 6:30 yesterday morning we had made plans to walk out on lake manitoba for some perch action. Now this lake can be kind and give you a great day or make you drive miles and punch 150 holes and only give you a few fish.Yesterday she was Very kind to Ron and myself  we got to the lake before sunrise and unloaded all the gear which you will see in the pics  We were prepared or should I say Blue Igloo was    so we headed out about a mile and a half two miles out and thank god there were hardpacked ski doo trails!Get the auger out and I punch 2 holes I had all my rods ready to go  so i set up my vex  and right on marking fish drop my hook up and a nice perch shoots up off the bottom to smash my lure right on good sign there were 3 more fish followng him up so i quickly get him on the ice and get my lure back down same thing and another nice perch on the ice I say to Ron this spots looks pretty good I catch one more before Ron gets rigged up and down the hole and a couple of seconds later lands a nice sized perch and another then his line gets messed up and he has to re rig again meanwhile my hole is hot and producing a perch on every drop after ron gets rigged again the wind had picked up and it was time to set up his 2 man portable and settle in for some perch slaying.Once we get settled in to the shack back to fishing my hole is on fire!! I think it was the only day that i ever only had to fish out of one hole  Ron was having a hard time with his line on his reels and it was slowing him down so i lent him one of my set ups and he was good to go landing perch after perch I had my pail almost filled by 11:00 am  I caught abunch of nice sized tullibees yesterday too 20 total i think. The action was fast and furious almost nonstop lots of little guys too around noon I had my pail filled and rons was about half full and we started working on filling that one too then with my jig at the bottom in a bit of slow point were just sitting there and all of a sudden the float on my transducer bobs  I say to Ron "did you see that" he says "yeah what the hell was that? " then it did it again so I was like what the hell i look down the hole and  I saw the end of a fish swim by the bottom of my hole then what i saw next
I still can't beleive and I'm sure glad someone else was there to see it a nice BURBOT swims up to my transducer and gently nudges it with his nose hence the float bobbing.  "Holy crap" I say and quickly reel up to the bottom of the hole he was off to the side a couple of jiggles and i see him swim over and suck in my lure i wait a half a second till i feel weight and set the hook into him a short fight cause he was right under the ice and a beautiful 27" 6lb burbot my first out of this lake this winter.I was pumped from watching it all go down I was shaking and hollering (sorry Ron )It was amazing to see that I wonder why the hell he came up to the transducer Crazy!!!!Man was that cool!! With that beauty on the ice the perch stared going mental again!! we fished and filled the other pail.It was awesome!! We shut er down at about three and took some shots of the catch. The final tally was between the two of us 201 nice perch 8" and up to 12.25" with a few smaller males that swallowed the hook bad.We also released almost as many perch as we kept. 20 tullibees approx. and 1 27" 6lb burbot and two happy and tired fisherman!!  Blue Igloo messaged me and said he got 5 1/2 lbs of primo perch filets and I ended up with 7.2 lbs on the digital including the back strips off the burbot.BTW so no one blasts me there is no limit on perch on Lake Manitoba and none of the fish is going to waste!!! It was one of those days where you hit them right off the bat and don't have to move.Ive been having a hard time with photobucket today these are the only pics I could load so far.
Me with a couple of nice perch.

27" 6lb burbot ;D Not a monster but it was cool how I caught it!

This is the bad pic of Blue Igloo and our catch (bad angle) I'll post the better one as soon as I get it on photobucket.

Did ya think you hooked a big walleye and then realized it was a burbot?  There must be some big eyes in that lake too.
There is some big eyes somewhere in that big lake but they are hard to catch."around noon I had my pail filled and rons was about half full and we started working on filling that one too then with my jig at the bottom in a bit of slow point were just sitting there and all of a sudden the float on my transducer bobs  I say to Ron "did you see that" he says "yeah what the hell was that? It was cool it all happened right at the bottom of the hole so I saw it all 8)
