ADK Fourth Lake Auger/Bait?

This may be a ridiculous question, but me and some  buddies are heading to fourth lake in mid february for a few days and I'm wondering if anyone knows of someplace up that way I can rent a gas auger or get one on the cheap without having to buy one new.  Also was wondering if anyone knew where I can find bait up in that area, and what bait you like to use for tip-ups there....

Which way will you be coming up? Dave's Bait and Tackle on Bunker Hill Rd. in Northhampton has several used augers for sale. He also may very well rent one to you. He's a real decent guy and has a lot of good info on the lakes up north.  www.davebaitandtackle. com

You can find the bait in the lake...Smelt. As for a power auger, I don't think there is that much ice to warrant the use of a power auger.

What do you guys use to jig the smelt?

Hali jigs or catty jigs tipped with spikes. Use a green light under the ice to bring them in before sun up.

You can find the bait in the lake...Smelt. As for a power auger, I don't think there is that much ice to warrant the use of a power auger.

Well then I gues you could justify the use of one. I was on Oneida last weekend and there was 5-6" and the power augers were out in full force.

What do you guys use to jig the smelt?

Cory, the smelt are soooo thick on fourth right now pretty much concentrated at the 30-35 FOW level. As Ranger advised, hali with a spike, UL rod and you'll have your bait in 15 minutes! Will be back Friday with Combsey in case you're heading down that way!

dont worry i agree fully 4in of ice in 10 ft of water and a power auger.... what a way to call in the fish. im a hand auger kind of guy myself a lot lighter and gets the job done with good blades as long as the bolt doesnt come out of one of the blades and leave it hanging like what happened to me today

I think it's time for a 4th lake trip and camp out on Alger Island. I am too consumed by chasing walleye.

Dont really know where i was last weekend just followed my buddy out but i got a nice laker 27 1/2 in and some smelt perch weren't really worth filleting for me. silver has been decent to me though the last few days. ive really got around this year fishing distance wise

I'm having good action right now in the 35-40 FOW range with tip ups. Jigging has been pretty slow. Hopefully the action will pick up tomorrow. Leaving for the Adks in an hour as soon as I get out of work!
