Hawkeye DF2120PX Portable Sonar System
« on: Feb 13, 2005, 08:54 PM »
Has anyone tried one of these? Did it work ok? Comments/feedbacK? I already haul enough stuff out on the ice, and don't want to haul a flasher. Size and shape like a flashlight, can find room for that. Thanks! ???

I had one for a year and liked it. As a matter of fact, someone else liked it too, cause they stole mine. It's no replacement for a good flasher unless you only use yours to find your spot and then shut it off. It only stays on for about 15 seconds to give you the depth or temp. You can get a fish icon that will show up if there is one detected below, but I wouldn't trust it. You can get a good reading through the ice by putting some water down first to get a good seal. I did have some false readings on mine, while my buddy's Vex portable didn't. It's more powerful than the Hawkeye, but for the price, it was hard to beat. Check ebay for a good deal. If you have to pay $99 for it, get one of the others for the same price. Either a Vex or a Marcum. Good luck.

I've used one for 2 years and like it a lot.  It's great for shooting depth thru the ice, much faster than drilling a hole and using a locator.  You might want to check Sharper Image.  I got mine from them for $60 on sale.  If you get one, use a lithium 9v battery.  The standard batteries don't last long in the cold.  There's not much difference between the various brands of portable depth finders except power, which is only an issue if you fish really deep water, and a number of the units are marketed by brand but manufactured by Marcum.
