Clam SUMMITT review.
« on: Jan 28, 2012, 05:30 PM »
Bought it last year and I do not recommend it.

This is not built to last.  Very cheap materials and It is now useless after 1.5 seasons of limited use.

On another note, a friend of mine has a 1 person flip over clam and has had it for MANY years and he likes it.

The Summitt gets a thumbs down from me.  Hope this helps someone!

If you own 1 you will know what I am saying.

You have to pull on 4 loops to "Pop" out the clam  , (actually 5 loops counting roof) anyway 1 loop actually came undone from the clam and it actually was insize the shanty so it is now not attached .  I had to put a pair of needle nose through the hole it left to grab it and pull it back out (can't do it bymyself have to have someone with me just to use it.)  Then 2 days ago one of the round pieces that are connected to the loops and it holds the 4 poles actually came apart and all 4 poles ended up on the floor unattached.  JUST straight up junk!  I am one of those guys who takes care of my stuff, it takes me longer to put stuff away then to load my truck.  I take everything out wash it , if need be, I wipe the vex dry after EVERY use , etc....
This thing was babied.  Put it to you this way , I am now toting around a Frabill Hideout from 1991 with me that has sat in my garage from the time I bought the Clam.   NEVER AGAIN an the CLAM SUMMITT...

I used mine 4 or 5 times so far and I haven't had anything with the shelter break, but the straps on the bag are not very strong and the ice anchor's are junk,by hand anyway.I plan on making a floor that folds up into a sled for it because it gets messy with out a floor and dryer also

I have a Clam Summit and love it. i have spent the night in windy cold nights. No problems. The worst part for the Clam is the anchors, I have to take a drill out to pre drill holes to get them to work. You have to pay attention with the summits to make sure you fold it properly or the side poles will get bind up with the roof.

My buddy just bought one and it seems fine to me. I guess I'm a little confused on your issues? They have eyebolts that stick out of a gourmet on the tarp portion that connects to the hub. If your poles came out of the hub it sounds like the eye bolt loosened up or stripped out and the cover came off of the hub causing the poles to be unattached.

My buddy actually snapped a pole one of the first times he used it when he was trying to force it when the legs got tangled. Clam sent him a whole new hub assembly with four poles. The design allows for them to be easily swapped out.

Have you tried contacting Clam? Maybe yours is different than my buddies but it just sounds like you had some issues with the eye bolts on the outside of the hubs.
