Cortland "toothy critter" knots
« on: Jan 29, 2012, 04:10 PM »
I am gonna get back into jigging for pike in the daylight hours. Sunfish are starting to get old so it is time to change it up. I picked up the necessary components to get rigged up and decided to use Cortland Toothy Critter tie-able leader instead of my trusty 1x7 uncoated surfstrand.

What kind of knots do you guys use for this stuff?

I bought 15lb if it makes any difference.

The Guy at the fly shop advised me to use an arbor knot. It work nice I was able to change flies with out cutting the line.

I have used the Cortland Toothy Critter line in # 35lb test and used a Palomar knot to attach my swivel and snap. I then tighten it up by pulling on the tag end with pliers until snug.

Thanks. That was going to be my default, I'm glad to hear it works. How did you like the stuff?

I have used it mostly for open water fishing, but found nothing wrong with it. It's nice that it's a bit more flexable and I feel might ad a bit more wiggle to the crank baits and spoons than a regular steel leader.

Trimming the tag end after tying it can be a bit tricky. I use some cutting sheers to cut it cleanly, but a good set of pliers with a cutting edge on it may work also.

all advise so far has been right on track. palomar knot. lots of spit. pull the tag end only. sharp sicssors to cut the curly line. leave a 1/4'' tag end after the cut.   much prefere fluorocarbon for a leader but, if you must use wire, this is the best of the ''other''.

ties hard for sure. lots of spit and a leatherman on the tag end.
