LAZER AUGER.. Now I know why it sucked
« on: Jan 26, 2012, 09:33 AM »
I bought a 5inch lazer hand auger a while back and it never cut as good as my buddy's who have them.... I then was speaking last year to a fellow fishing buddy from IS and he said check your blades... The blades that come IN THE BOX on some of the new ones are NOT the SWEDEN BLADES.... So I made the change lastnight and sure enough the old blades had the good ol MADE IN CHINA on them.... The new blades are MADE IN SWEDEN..... I hope the swedens are the ticket.. will find out b4 long

must be the blades. I've had mine for about 5 years. The tips have broken off and it still cuts effortlessly. My busted shoulder doesnt help, but junk ice anyhow. If the ice would just melt I'd get the little boat out..

This is true they will change them out at no cost just email them with the serial number on the back of the blades once removed from auger with your adress.  Those ones with no sweedish markings are chinese and will only cut good on first two outings then nada.
Did I tell you that carver......I make sure I check the bottom of all my buddys augers now.

I don't see any markings on mine but it seems to cut pretty good. What does the marking look like? Can they wear off?

I had to replace my 5 inch a couple of years ago after the one I had came out of my drill and ended in the bottom of Gull lake in 80 ft of water. When I got a new one it cut like crap.....I read the same thing and had them send me the sweden blades.....it cut alot better but it did not seem to cut like my original 5 inch and I have a old 6 inch that is rusted and such and it still cuts great. What do you expect....Chineese junk.

I have a 5" lazer and it rips thru ice smooth as silk and has for five years without sharpening. I guess I must have the Swedish blades.  Great little auger for prospecting n pannies. Love that thing!

Hopefully yours will treat you as well now that you have good blades.  Kinda crappy they tried delivering crap product on their good name for awhile, at least they're trying to make it right by sending replacement blades of expected quality.

You probably got a auger made in Sweden. They make great quality products in Sweden. My first 5"  I bought about 5 years ago and it cut through the ice like it was going through hot butter. Had it for two years. Lost that one in the lake. The next was made in China....Junk. Cut like crap Got some sweden blades and it cut better but not like the first. The owners of the company are tryin to make a extra buck by building it overs seas even in Sweden.  Hear some manufacturing is coming back to the states.....maybe someone is finally getting wise.

I bought an 8" Lazer a couple years ago to replace an OLD mora that my goon buddy borrowed for a day and told me he could hardly get a hole through by the end of the day- even though he was 'setting' the blades good and hard. Grrrr. Bent handle and what not, impossible to get a smooth hole after that.

Anyway, the NEW 8" has always been a pain in the bucket-warmer.  Pretty sure that came with the crappy blades.

Stopped at cabelas in Hammond yesterday and picked up an 8" Nils velocity. Looking forward to cranking it up Saturday.

But I'll be bringing that 5" with me as long as I own it :)

I had the same problem with my 5" blades, made in China. Talked to Strikemaster and they would not replace mine becouse they were too old. I replaced them myself with Swedish blades and they cut like butter.
I'm not as good as I once was but I am good once as I ever was.

topwater, the markings are etched in and do not rub off.  There are a few diffrent variations of the etching but if there is nothing then take them off and there shoul be a serial number on the back of the blade that you will need to contact strikemaster with and they will send you a sweedish pair.  I belive they send reconditioned blades which will not have that out of the box, new factory edge but the steel that they are made from will hold an edge for a longer time.  The chinese blades will cut fine but will not hold an edge for as long so the more holes you drill the more useless they become untill you can not drill very well at all.

Why does everyone have such a heart thump for the lazer augers? I have a 5" strikemaster mora that works just fine...why is the extra money worth it?

Mora is fine until you try someone elses auger. I'll never go back to a mora. See if someone using a lazer will let you cut a couple holes and you'll see the diffrence. I did.

its easy to tell if you have china blades on the flute it will have a strikemaster made in china sticker,i pay close attention while reading the box also my augers all say strikemaster made in sweden and have swedish blades.sometimes at the stores all the mora and lazer boxes look the same but if you look reel good youll see a mix of chinas and swedens.
