Black Rock
« on: Jan 21, 2012, 12:31 AM »
Afriend and I fished Black Rock 2:30 til dark. My friends tip ups came up empty. I managed to jig up 3 perch, 1 pumpkinseed, and a Bluegill after he left. Tried a Lindy Rattler Flyer got nothing, swapped to a Mimic Minnow got a few sniffs and a dink perchand the pumkinseed after workin for them. Finally tied on a Mud Bug and the flasher came alive, started getting hits, missed more then i stuck but at least gave me hope for the season.

I am surprised people spend time fishing there at all.  I never liked that place.  Turns into Squantz on a hot summer day, if you've ever been near squantz in the summer you know what I am talking about.

It gets hit hard due to to the stocked trout.    It's one of those place to avoid on opening day.

Are there any depth charts on Black Rock ?  Any better Jigging action  ?  Crappie  ?  How deep is it, and what is the average depth ?

I'm assuming you are referring to the "guests" it attracts being so near an urban area. I've never had much luck there in the summer so I usually fish other places. Even in the winter I have a love/hate relationship with it. It's close, convenient, and I'm pretty familiar with because of time spent there. On the flip side it is  :%$#!:fickle structureless bowl that makes you work for your fish.

Yes to the Crappies there is an old timer who seems to have them down to a science.
I have one but it is from the "60s

I hear you Fishville, but imo I'd rather drive another 20-30 to hit Tyler, Dog, Mt. Tom.  Yes I am talking about the urbanites.  It's not as bad as Squantz but bad enough for me to not consider fishing there even during the winter.  Spring I went once and had some local jerkoff follow me around in his kayak, like he owned the place.  Not the spot for me.

I believe the deepest part of the lake is next to route 6 next to the dam.  In the spring the hot spot for the trout is off of the beach, but they fence it off so you cant fish on it.  It definately takes a pounding at the times around Opening Day.  Like it was said, there is specks in there but they run small along with mostly everything else in there including the trout.  Its a good place to take the kids a week or so after opening day and have them stick a couple trout.  I have never personally ice fished Black Rock though.

If I'm not mistaken there aren't supposed to be any watercraft in there. It would go along way if the rangers and conservation officers patrolled there.

I live close to black rock. I grew up fishing there and was always sitting on the rock waiting for sunup on opening day. It is a toilet of a place. Put and take trout with some panfish. It gets the usual old guy/easy access pounding. P. Dona , don't ever waste your time there. I have seen many of your reports and it's not worth the effort. Like I said, I am minutes away and won't even look at it.

Both sections ban watercraft. If you saw someone in the Flood Control side I;m really surprised because the Corp. rangers patrol pretty heavy.

Ive been there when the rangers were there and people were paddling yaks trolling and they said nothing.  As far as I knew only the pond has no boats.

Click on rules and regulations.  Then look at section 327.3(c) clearly states they are allowed unless posted otherwise.

:-[ You're right I just checked the Anglers Guide and it says the Federal side is a Cartop launch. For some reason I remember it being posted no boats.

I wouldn't PLAN on fishing there, it's just too far for me, and I have other bodies of water that are more productive.   Feb 4th C.A.R.E. is having their NO CHILD  LEFT INSIDE Winter Festival ,  10:00 am- 3:00 pm    Activities include fish stocking, ice fishing, fish fry, tracking, snowshoeing, ice safety rescue demonstrations, visits with Resources in Search and Rescue and CT Volunteer Horse Patrol.   This is oriented towards getting families with kids interested in ice fishing.  I'll be on the ice instructing with about 20 other instructors.  It's free, and all of the equipment, and knowledge is provided to the families to use for the day.
Thanks for the tips, guys !!

Yup, and it was interesting having this old guy follow me and my fiance around the place.  I'll never go there again!
