Devil's Lake Ice
« on: Jan 11, 2012, 02:21 PM »
What's the latest?

Headed up next Wed. It appears that.... (fingers crossed) the lake should be good to go for pickups?

I'd take any advice on ice fishing there as I never have before. A PM is great too.

A coworker was there this weekend and said 12 to 14" clear ice. I fished Stump Lake which is connected to Devils and it had 12" good ice. I punched over 100 holes while running and gunning with the snowmobiles and the ice looked good.

The three of us ended up with a few perch and 13 walleye. It wasn't hot but fishing is fair.

Thanks man, the only ice in Nebraska has mostly been on Cocktails. I was streamfishing for trout in shirt sleeves Sunday.

Been a tough few days on DL with the cold and wind.  Brutal, but we've fished!

Todd, how was the fishing? The weather has been brutal up here lately! Also, how thick was the ice? Thanks

I went with Todd.

Fished was slow for us, 10" - 13" Eyes in the morning & evenings but no keepers.  Cold & wind kept us in the Permmie except for one morning we moved around searching for Perch & only ended up with a few more short Eyes.

Ice ranged from 14" to 18", only saw on pressure ridge.   Everybody seems to be driving around, some of them are flying.

It was a brutal trip weather wise. If Bum and I wouldn't have been picky, we'd have came home with 20 but we left them swimming.

Lots of guys moving around asking about the fishing. Most reported zero to a few fish a day. The most we'd get was 10 or so in morn or eve but it could also be 1-3 in a morn or eve. We never found much of a mid-day bite. On friday we drilled 50 holes driving around and stuck 2 small walleyes, wasn't worth the effort.

Red Buckshot was best for me.  Also a plain hook and bobber.

I don't know where the fish were, but with the temps, wind and blowing snow it was virtually impossible to fish outside of a permie except for Friday.

I would tell you also that it seemed like the places putting out reports could add 20' to the depth they indicated in their reports for where their shacks were....

Ah yes devils lake otherwise known as the dead sea on a cold front.  Been there many times in that situation  >:( >:( >:(. FYI if it happens to ya again try some of the shallower lakes in the area and you will scratch out a few more biters there.  Thanks for bringing back some colder weather!!!!! ;D

We wanted to try some others but it's a limited info type of area it seems. One of the guys that banged on our permie door did a bunch of pickup scouting at area lakes and he didn't find much happening off DL either but who knows.

Great lake, it will be gangbusters this summer I'm sure.
