Weather/Time "guidlines" for ice fishin.
« on: Feb 18, 2005, 09:25 AM »
Hello,  I am new to ice fishing... I was wondering if anyone could give me advise on good and bad fishing weather conditions and also good times to fish.  I went fishing last night and go skunked.
Thanks-  Ryan. ;D

Weather is subjective. It is mostly how prepared you are. How well dressed you are,  and how familiar are you with the lake. Ihave had great days of fishing when there's a blizzard outside my shanty and when it's 50 and sunny. I usually do well fishing anywheres between sunrise and sunset. I would also try to fish for as many different species as possible per fishing trip because some species bite better at different times of the day.

I think being dressed for the weather makes the weather a non issue. I have a refridgaware suit, skigogles and super warm gloves and boots. I pull a one person shanty behind me so I can get out of the wind anywhere and anytime. You must be ready for the worst, but you will be able to enjoy your time out then

I've had my best luck between 12:00pm and 11:59am only on days that end in "Y".

Typically, the worse the weather, the better the fishing, especially for lakers. Lakers don't hit when it's sunny. For lakers it is best at sunrise to one hour after and one hour before sunset to about 30 min after. That goes for walleye as well.

Crappie it is best fishing from about 30 min before sunset to about 2AM the following morning. Crappies don't hit at sunrise, probably because they are full from eating most of the night.

For perch, bluegill, rainbows, browns, cuttbows, cutthroats, and brookies, the best fishing is between sunrise and 3:00pm, they seem to shut down after that.

Pike like sunrise to about 9AM, then 4PM-6PM
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.

if you have enough time to get to the lake fish for however long you feel it necessary to make thetrip worthwhile then GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOO if it is -300 F  go!!!   JK   I don't have a good shanty or the greatest clothes or gear for bad weather so when it is VERY cold or windy I stay home!!!

just go out on a beautiful day and enjoy the ice, nature and who knows, maybe the fish will be biting ;D  its just nice to get out.  but i also find that the fish bite best on a really cold day with little wind.

Go as much as you can, as often as you can, try all times of the day.Try all different methods. This site can help you out immensely. I have people call me quite often to see if the fish are biting because I fish allot. They hear about my good days but they fail to ask some very important questions. They don't ask what I was doing, or where I was at when I got skunked.Eveytime you get skunked or someone else does find where they were, time, depth, you know what not to do. the Process of elimination.  You can learn allot if you ask the right questions.
Fisherman don't like to give info they have worked so hard to figure out, they will probably lie. Just the way were are. But you can learn more from asking the right questions.
I hope you get my drift?
