Is my decoy garbage?
« on: Jan 03, 2011, 01:08 AM »
So I just purchased the Bear Creek brand perch decoy and it has a different action than any other decoyi have ever used. When I pull up it spins a circle like usual but when i let go it's nose goes upward an comes to a screeching halt and falls straight back down the hole... My previous decoys would always "swim" a circle all the way back down to the bottom so is this one messed up? do i need to bend the fins? or is it defective?

I just posted about how to make your own decoy but If you don't have allot of time on you hands than yeah Buschwhacker knows how to make good working decoys and I'm not positive but like Gamedog said I'm sure it's a good price compared to what you would find any where else.

I have most of the decoys bear creek makes but mine are from when they 1st started making them, the ones I have work awesome but I figured I'd buy another recently just to have another, and was not happy with their new decoys I don't what it is that they changed but they sure don't preform like old ones I adjusted the fins on it and it did swim a little better but it seems like the nose of the decoy needs to be weighted more. Thats just my opinion tho

tune your decoys, boys. . . . . . .it's all part of this fun. bend the fins, one at a time. up/down/flatten.  you can make a plastic bear creek swim like a real fish iffn you mess with it.        taint jokin', it's part of the spearing thing.   dip the tails into a pot of boiling water and put a slight tweek on it.    go back to the hole and givver a try.    keep messing with it til you get it right or trash the decoy.     sell the trashed decoy on ebay or donate it to st. vinnies/salvation army.    either way, everybody wins.     don't be afraid to mess with stuff.   worst case, you trash it and have to buy another.

I guess goose has a point, if you think it's junk than you might as well start messing with it to the extreme like maybe even gluing on some lead where you need it or taking off some bend in the tail or you could try moving the eyelet forward or back. I must say though if I pay $20 for a plastic one ( some places charge that) than it should fly good right out of the package.

I find the weight of the lead and swivel to effect the swim in my decoys. Some seem to chance alot by the weight of the connection. Tune it with what you use and see if that will if you mess it up tuning it cann't swim any worse by the sounds of it.  ;D
