where do you catch gold shinners?
« on: Dec 17, 2011, 05:38 PM »
where do you catch them, what bait? i caught couple by accident on a lake before on hook, but thats it. we usual catch bait in streams with sein or traps but thats for chubs and dace and emerald shinners. i have never seen them in a stream before. are they a lake minnow only? what areas can i target for catching them rod and reel, and can you get them this time of year? there no large bodis of water near me close enough to put traps out and be able to check them daily. thanks

I really only know of one lake in Kent county (MI) where I can catch them. They normally cover a lot of area in a short time. I think they mainly feed on plankton and freshwater shrimp. I can get them to bite on whatever I offer bluegills on that lake because they normaly bite like they haven't been fed in a month. But their schools are in and out of an area fast if I catch one the rest are gone before I get a jig back down. Definitely excellent pike bait especially when I get one six or more inches long.

Anyone have any tips on keeping shiners kickin' besides clean cool aerated water. What would be a good food for them...tropical fish food?

You don't need a large lake to find shiners.  We trap alot of them in beaver bogs,  farm ponds,  streams.   Just some old stale white bread, alittle bit of dry dogfood, and a couple small pieces of white styrofoam(they seem to like the color white) and throw in your bait trap.  if You got ice on your pond then you want to suspend your bait trap just below the ice

I just go to a river and catch em on a bobber and a small hook tipped with a little piece of worm.
