Rockport - 01/09/2012
« on: Jan 09, 2012, 11:53 PM »
Had some things to wrap up at home this morning, so I scrapped my trip to Strawberry and opted instead for Rockport Reservoir... and it did not work out.

I got there around 11:30 and fished until a little after 5:00... beautiful day... the fish didn't bother me once.  :-\

I fished from the boat ramp to Three Points, from 7' to 50' of water, up and down the column... NOTHING. I bet I marked fewer than half a dozen fish. Very discouraging. I tried jigs, Chubby Darters, Jiggin' Raps, spoons, dropper rigs... just about everything I had in the box.

Plenty of ice though, 8-10" everywhere I drilled and there were guys all over the lake. Sleds and quads too, no problems getting on at all.

Weather was perfect, maybe too perfect as I didn't see many other anglers connecting either.

Light dusting of snow out on the ice, but the thin layer I dragged my sled on to start was all but gone when I returned later. It was like spring out there today; no wind, low 40's.

Looking towards the dam

Looking towards the Weber River inlet.

If I go there again - and at this point it's hard to excited about that thought - I think I'll try the upper end as it may offer softer bottoms and sloping contours. The areas I fished today were steep dropping rock bottoms, and I usually get my perch over mud basins.

Back-to-back skunks now... can't remember the last time that happened.  :'(

My friend and I were there from about 8:30 until 4:00.  We fished off the launch in 48 feet to start.  Then we made a couple of moves in towards the launch before moving once again out towards the middle.  We ended up at 58 feet.

We caught 7 rainbows runing from about 14 to 18 inches.  We tried fishing on the bottom for perch and caught zero.  The trout were all suspended at 10 to 15 feet.  I was in a Clam Yukon and my friend was outside with his BBG grill gas tank and heater going.  There was just enough breeze to make it uncomfortable sitting outside - for me.

We tried many different jig/bait combinations but nothing really stands out as a hot combo.  The best area was the last one at 58 feet with more trout coming by in the 10 to 15 foot area.

I guess I need to put some logos on the outside of my Clam so folks will know I'm a member of some forums and maybe stop and say 'Howdy.'

Well dizzy that just sucks man  :(  i fished them same points last year and did fairly well for the trout. Maybe the drive to the berry might have been the better option talkin catch rates atleast not fuel. Really sorry the fish gods havent got your back yet. You know what they say though persistance pays off

I must have seen you guys Bob. I walked past a guy that fits your buddy's description around 1:30-2:00… I gave him a "How's it going?" but he didn't respond, so I didn't bother him. Unless people pop up and respond back I just let them be and keep on hauling. I've had more than a few people stare at me like I'm trying to sell them life insurance when I approach.  ;D

Were you the guy with the dog running around? If so, I met your dog.

I was in a camo suit pulling a "pimped out" Jet Sled.

That definitely does make a difference. If I see the IS.com log, I will bug you.

Dizzy,

I did see you walk by from inside my tent.  I saw the camo suit but didn't pay much attention to the sled.  I'm betting that Earl didn't hear you or he would have responded.  We've both shot too many firearms in our life, if you know what I mean.

And no, that wasn't our dog.

Thanks. I think this will be the final season for the PVC King Richard Petty Model Jet Sled... maybe the 2012/2013 model will have some STP red incorporated into it as well.  ;D

We have had teen temps for last 2 days, but the 40 mph gusts didnt allow the skim to set.both sides of the coin there, bad becouse we didnt even have skim after 24 hours of teens, but good becouse we got a couple inchs of snow.If we had the skim it would be insulated and not makin ice very fast.I have not been out to check this mornin, but I`d be real suprised if we didnt have locked up skim everywhere..JT

I really hope the temps drop cosistantly and the "W" cooperates with you guys there. I have been trippin out here too as my polaris hasnt even left the trailer yet this year and my legs have had the best workout to date at least since my 20's  :)
