Author Topic: I officially lost it: Hoot Lk #2 (Read 2020 times)

It was 1am and i couldnt sleep, the weekend had begun and I had two days off and i knew where i wanted to trek into (yes i only think about fishing on my weekends)-back into Hoot Lake.

Seemed like a long time before daylight and then the lakers seem to wake up. I made it a goal to try new lures and techniques then finally FISH ON! YES.. Taking drag-ooo feels like a big one, Woow-its got some weight....after a while i got this very heavy fish to the hole. i could see her, tried numerous times
to line this lunker to the hole, i got her nose started and when i tried to get her up it seemed like something was pulling her and i couldnt get her no further..
I scooped the very small pieces of ice out of my 8" hole and got a better look at this fish and it was a monster.

With her beak up the hole her shoulders would not fit up the hole- holy !@#$!!!! i wrapped the line tight around one hand and attempted numerous times to get the lunker up the hole but to no avail..

Then the fish came unhooked

The moment i seen the fish disappear away from my hole i jumped up and swore as loud as i could many times and many different words

and then i lost it! I shadow kicked and punched while swearing as loud as i could around the lake until i found myself on my knees with watery eyes yelling WHY???

I had just lost a fish to dream about, the kind of fish that every fish dream involves, the kind i search and hunt for...
I felt like running to the edge of the earth -hiding in a deep cave with a big heavy blanket and balling my eyes out!
I felt like quitting and trekking back to my truck and crawling in the back seat and crying!
I dont think ive ever felt a hot burning feeling in my chest which could put any icefisherman/woman into depression instantly like this before!
I sat in my chair with tears in my eyes and the longest face ever and with disbelief while replayed what just happened in my head over and over and over..

I was sad!

I was contemplating giving into the fish gods and packing up and going home as the thought of laying in bed listening to music under the warm covers seemed very comforting..

Man oh Man, if someone else was on that lake and was watching me they would have thought i had totally lost my mind- HeHe..

And that my friend is why you always bring a 10" auger when you are chasing giant lakers!!!

well i guess its better to have loved and lost.. but that said, i guess its too late to suggest a mickey mouse hole, as i have only ever used a 6 or 8 inch hole, i have in a few lakes prepared myself with the mickey. I recall this same story with myself on my lake with a ling cod. I tend to MM from then on.

An almost identical story drove my buddy to return his brand new 8" power auger and slap down the visa for the 10". I would suggest you do the same. Those big lakers are a tight squeeze through an 8" hole.

Sucks about the fish. We have all been there!

Very sad story buddy but I was wondering who's holding that big laker on the computer behind that cut hand of yours. Also looks like the background is messed with. Do you have something to tell us Ian.

being the idiot that I am, I would have just lipped it and squeezed it through the hole, my fingers would be shredded, but they'd heal..

sounds like you need a buddy fishing with you to help squeeze that fish through the hole.

There are spots up here where the fish are big enough that they won't fit through a 10" hole and you're better off clover leafing with your 10" auger.
Have a look at this laker caught in Great Slave last July and you can see what I mean.
I think you would need 6 linked 10" holes to get this cow up.

I'm guessing he bonked it - just before taking the picture he just happened to have on his monitor in the background of the pic he posted.

Surely he will be posting later today admitting that he kept at it and hooked that monster again.

Ian is more clever than that, he put that picture on the monitor intentionally, and positioned his fingers just so we can see the fish, and nothing else. Ian wouldnet bonk a fish like that unless he knew it wouldent survive

Well i did lose a monster, but i caught tons of fish that day!
