HEATERS
« on: Dec 02, 2011, 04:24 PM »
I am trying to find out who sells a heater I have seen that can be flipped upward and used to put a pot of water on for cooking

I have a small one burner cook top but they give off way too much moisture and your tent walls get too wet.

You're looking for a sunflower heater that had a rubber hose to attach it to the tank, they can usually be mounted to a BBQ tank at different angles, including facing up so they can be used like a burner. I don't know off the top of my head where they're selling units like that, but I'm sure I've seen one at Princess Auto before.

The one I have seen uses either a one pound bottle or I could hookup a hose and run it off a tank.  I don't want one that goes on top the tank because of the space the tank takes up.  Even tho I have the 3 man tent it really is a two man but seems crowded with just me and all the stuff if you know what I mean.

I run a sunflower heater with the 1lb bottles. heats up the small tent and we have cooked on it a lot. Works great for frying up fresh fish as well.

A real cheap way to heat your shanty is to take a small sauce pan and place it on top of some wood(2x4 etc). Then just fill it half full with "methyl hydrate" aka wood alchohol or methanol, and light it with a long stem lighter or match. There are many different brand names of methyl hydrate (gas line antifreeze or air brake antifreeze), but the cheapest one at Canadian tire was 5 bucks a gallon. They're all the same chemical so don't waste your money on the more expensive ones. (motormaster gas line antifreeze is 10 bucks a litre and is also NOT methanol but is ETHANOL instead which means you can drink it  ;D :woot: :cookoo: (pure moonshine..... Hilarious). Anyway as I was saying, methyl hydrate burns clean, making only CO2 and H20 gasses, it's water soluable and has flash point of +12C. It will extinguish on contact with ice and water and is the safest fuel there is. Just make sure your shanty is not airtight or the fire will burn off all your oxygen. Your welcome.    :icefish:

A friend of mine uses methyl hydrate.  But he uses an old metal tobacco can and a roll of toilet paper.  It fits nicely in the can. He soaks the toilet paper almost the point of dripping if he flips it on its side.  Also the metal lid snuffs out the flame when he wants to put it out.  Much safer than an open container being lit.  Cant be spilt making an extremely dangerous situation.
Just remember the worst day of fishing is still better than the best day at work!

I've heard of the toilet paper trick too but the problem is once the fuel burns down the paper begins to burn and then you're breathing smoke. A sauce pan has a lid and a HANDLE so you can grab it as well as extinguish the flame with the lid. No worries if you spill it cause like I said it has a flash point of +12 so it goes out on contact with ice if you spill it.(and water due to its solubility) don't get me wrong ...T.P. roll is not a bad idea, I've tried it but I don't like breathing smoke.(nor my kids) methyl hydrate creates co2 and h20 only.
