moving a shack
« on: Jan 02, 2009, 10:52 PM »
k here is the problem. My shack is pretty darn heavy and there is getting to be alot of snow on the lake. I only got 2 4x4 skids on it and i want to move it so i was wondering if anyone has any ideas what i could put under it out on the lake that is pretty simple to do. ( i tried to move it a couple of days ago but the snow just builds up in front of it to much) Any suggestions would be much apprietated. Thanks and tight line everyone!!!!

What do you do at the end of the season when it's time to get it off of the lake?

Work very hard, most of the time -  :flex: :%$#!:  The biggest thing is making the decision as to when to get it off.  We like to watch the ice (surface) conditions and take it off anytime that it is good (hard) in the last 3 weeks of the season.  Giving consideration to the 10-day weather forecast, sometimes we wait till till the end (March 15th here).

Ive a big 8x12 on three 4x4s and we have 2 feet of snow and it plows a lot of snow i build the road on the lake as i pull it what i did to help it out a bit was to put a longer tow rope on it abought 12 feet and it does not plow half as bad as it used to. that way if you get stuck you have some room to sling shot it to get it moveing again. Just  a little note i pull my shack with a truck not a skidoo or quad.

If you really want to move the bob house you should take a shovel and shovel a path to the new spot. Or shovel just enough snow to slide the bob house to the new location. You may need two people to pull it if you have no snowmobile.

Here in Maine we sometimes have deep snow, Try getting a old car hood ( upside down). Put the front of the shack up on it and it will ride on top of alot of snow.

could you try and make 2x8 skids for it and try and attach those using a jack of some sort?

Here in Manitoba we've got a 6x8 that can be a real pig to move at the end of the season. I usually use the sled to make a "highway" the day before we move and try to move early in the morning when everything is still really frozen up. That's in late March when the snow etc. is really getting sloppy. This time of year I do the same thing. A couple of hours after you make the trail it will have frozen up and it'll be alot easier to move.
Good luck.

Just jack one side up at a time and nail/ screw 2x10's or 12's to the side.  Boom!  You just gave your shanty a lift kit.  Shoveling and snow blowers are too much work.  I like easy.

I just hook up a rope drag mine. There really aren't any skids on it either, the frame is built strong enough for some abuse....It makes for one giant snow plow, haha.

The night before pack down a nice trail with a snowmobile, the next morning it will be hard packed. Double up on sleds or wheelers to pull it. Maybe a couple old sleds under front of the skids.

we use a tow bar... it is set up as one big triangle and we have the triangle sheeted... as we move the snow goes under the bar and causes a lift at the front of the shack as we pull.  Our shack is 6 x 10 and we don't have to much problems. Our shacks here have to be off the ice by March 15. Most of the time, we have had a few melt days and the snow on th elake, if there is any, is pretty hard
