I keep mine simple 50Yds of 30# tip-up line with a 10 foot long 8# spiderwire leader and usually a #4 or 6 single hook

I just use 20-30# pound braid, run it through a bead twice for a depth marker, put a egg sinker on and then a snap swivel. Then I have all of my 20# leaders pre-rigged on one of the round snell rig type holder and put em on the swivel. I have some with blades and beads on them, and some are just a plain old size 6-8 treble or octopus hook.

I have been using 30lb black vinyl coated braided dacron line on all my tip ups for close to 15 years. I love it. My friends use whatever 20lb or 30lb tip up line is cheapest. I either put a 6" to 9" 20lb or 30lb steel leader with a # 8 red treble hook on it or I tie a swivel on the tip up line and then tie on 3ft of 14lb flurocarbon with a #8 red treble hook. (no snap and swivel by treble hook). 1st setup is for pike. 2nd is for walleye and pike. If your going to fish for trout, you would need a longer leader. (6ft to 8ft). Maybe 10lb test line also. Remember if you are using a lighter line for a leader, you cannot horse the fish out of the hole.

Do you have to put a sinker on, or will the bait stay down without it?

You need a sinker.  I use a #4 split shot on a 8-10 lb. fluoro leader, about 18" from the hook.  I may try an egg sinker on the line, above the swivel with a bead in between, like some of the other guys do.  I don't know if I want 3-5 feet of leader floating around the sinker though.  It seems like it would be hard to keep the bait on bottom.  I am also using #8 trebles.  I am switching to red #1 or 2 octipus hooks.  I just had a baby walleye swallow the treble whole.  I had to harvest a fish that should have been thrown back.

i usually put 100yds of black dacron then a snapswivel so that I can change out my leaders.  I usually run with about 6' of flourocarbon in either 8-12lb test depending on what I'm fishing for.  Then a sz 6 hook.  I'll put a split shot 18" up from the bait.   If I'm fishing pike then I attach my quick strike rig which is about 3' long with a swivel to the snap swivel on my dacron.  works for me.  If I'm using beads then I Have a bunch of pre-rigged flourocarbon leaders and hooks already rigged with the beads so that i can just attach them or trade them out to mach the bite.
