Murky Waters
« on: Dec 23, 2011, 06:30 PM »
My spot on Diefenbaker lake is frozen over but the water is really murky, I can only see down about two feet. What should I do? I have been jigging with minimal sucess and the tipups haven't taken a hit yet. Starting to think I might have to wait a while until the clearity improves or move to another spot.

It is the same way at Blackstrap...pretty murky but they are biting. So I would keep on fishing and don't worry about the murky water. I will admit that it is slower than usual but you should be catching something.

Have you tried a different spot on the lake sometimes it makes a difference. Hopefully things clear up for you.

What part of deif are you on? Just curious ice conditions on the bays around elbow.

I fish the whole east side of Dief. Some spots are frozen nice but some have really thin spots, I recommend using extreme caution when going on the ice. Should smelly baits help in the dirty water or maybe something flashy? I only have bites on tiny spoons and I think its just cause the fish are cruising by and it catches their attention, they don't seem hungry.

In murky water, smell is a good option, but having bait that rattle or give off a fair amount of vibration helps the fish
zero in on your location.  If you place another less active lure or bait close by, they might go for that if the other is not to their liking. ;)

Going out tomorrow to try some rattling lures, if that doesn't work I'm going to move to another part of the lake for a while.

I heard the ice down that way was good, around Elbow where I am seems to be the last to freeze up.

The lake is still open but most coulees are frozen over, 10-15'' of ice on the coulees I fish. The ice is clear and solid. Fishing from Thurs.-Sun. if anyone is going to be out this way, the weather should be great!!

I was in the Q valley at echo with a very bright lure in only 7 feet of water and looking down the hole all last year i could see it clear as day, but now I can barely see it at all. Mostly can't see it. I was told it's because of all the run off this year, their was tons of dirty water poored into the lakes. Do you think that is true? I just heared it.

The water in Dief. seemed clear this summer and now I can only see a few feet down, I think due to the lack of snow the sun can shine through the ice and some kind of algae is growing. With the recent snow cover I hope visibility improves.

I have often wondered why dief is clear at times and yet other times not. I have come to the conclusion that when they have a lot of water leaving the lake via generation, it may be pulling some stuff off the bottom. Just my 2 cents though.

The water level is extremely low compared to this summer, I think they drained a lot out because of the Elbow harbor getting all that work done. So that does make sense.

The water clearity has improved quite a lot and the fishing is really picking up. Now with some colder weather coming the lake should get a few more inches of ice and the Walleye holes will be accessible.
