Fly reels and straight lining question
« on: Mar 08, 2012, 06:59 AM »
What can I use as a light weight spoon filler instead of fly rod backing or mono,I'm trying to keep the over all weight down, while getting bigger loops of line on the reels to get less coils. Any help? I was thinking about that flexable Styrofoam or making a plastic ring to go around the spool.

I can't see any weight saving advantage in not using any backing on the reel, we only talking 3 or 4 ounces at most ! Finding a way to secure foam padding to the reel arbor sounds like a lot of work for not much gain ? I used left over Dacron as backing and 100 yard of Gamma 4lb Co-polymer line and it works great for me, I also use the Bentley Tungsten jigs so I don't have any line coil issues, just my .02, Good luck.

I have seen a photo of someone putting some pipe insulation foam on and taping it up with electrical tape.

For myself, I simply just use flyline backing.

big loops and no backing, look at the icetech reels, good for straight lining tiny jigs. it has some draw backs as the line always has to remain tight, its not a good choice for lures such as pimples that twist the line. overall i like the reel, fits your hand better than a flyreel.

Wrap the arbor with cork used for pin up boards. It will not be half as flimsy as foam pipe insulation.
