Why do you think the 9 and 20 degree cones are switched? Describe what its doing that you don't think is right.

I always drill 3 holes when fishing 1 for vex out front inbetween the othe 2 and all are 12 to 16inches apart roughly anyway laast time out iwas fishing in 11 fow and when in 20 deg couldn't pick up the fiskas jig and waxy but on 9 deg I could pick it up but would fade in and out so I put the vex in the same hole I was fishing in and all was fine didn't have mucuh time to experiment after that as the fishing picked up ganna experiment again this week in deeper water

Sorry to hear of the problems you are having with you tri beam.
I bought my tri beam before the season started. Now I have been out  about 15 times and have had no trouble with mine. Its has been a great upgrade for my FL12.
I am sure the Vexlar folks would like to hear of the problem and should make it right for you.

Picked one up early in November this year, been out 4 times with it and it worked great. Make sure the ducer is hanging straight, there should have been an instruction sheet with it. Make sure you do this to get it hanging straight. I talked to Vex when I first got mine after discovering the trouble they had last year. This ducer has trouble hanging straight from the factory.

Could you pick up your jig on the 20 degree if you turn the gain up?

I have found that often times more gain is required to see the jig good on the wider cone angles vs the narrow cone angle. This is part of the reason why I use the 9 degree the vast majority of the time, I get a stronger signal with it.

Ok had it out up at okaboji in 8' fow and could not pick up my jig or any fish so it turned it to 9 deg and there was my jig now I flipped it back to 20deg no jig so I turned up my gain and found my jig but I had to have my gain turned almost 3/4 the way up not sure it this is normal??? Seems like a lot of gain to me any thoughts on this

What jig were you using? Were you in low power mode?

The 20 degree should have been able to pick the jig up with no or very little gain.

I had the exact same problem today with mine. I did do the test and did it again tonight but it doesn't seem to be working right. I emailed vexilar to see what they will say. I think I probably got a bad one cause that seems to be my luck with ice fishing gear  :( Hopefully I'm just doing something wrong and it's an easy fix.  ;D Just have to wait for a reply from vexilar.

I started with a fiskas but used a salmo and a hali with a chain dropper and a 1/16 oz jig with a plastic and had to have the gain way up to find any of the lures but I'm not sure about the low power mode I wasn't on it right away but did switch to it later still would think it should pick up better going to contact vex and c what they say

Mine is working great, the 20 degree cone needs more gain than the 12 and 9 degree settings. The tribeam is hard to get to hang straight, try different positions in your hole or turn your ducer slightly to see if your jig shows up better. I also found that the bottom of the ducer needs to wiped with your hand or on your leg, that has made a big difference in not needing to turn the gain up. I am not sure why but these ducers do not always hang straight, I thought mine was bad to but after experimenting and getting it hanging straight and wiping the bottom often all is good.

The fiskas should show up really well. I've noticed Halis do not throw a good solid signal like tungsten jigs do, partly because of the slender profile. You have to use more gain with the wide angles but it sounds like your gain is excessive. Contact Vexilar and see what they have to say.

I haven't had any problems with mine so far...but I do know that if you call Vexilar they will send you a new one that has been tested first. Call and talk to Tom. He will fix you up.
