Ice locations in ontario **READ THIS**
« on: Dec 19, 2011, 04:02 PM »
Mind the spelling etc..  Done on my iPhone.

Seeing as the weather is mild in southern Ontario ice fishing scugog, simcoe, frenchmans bay etc.. Is beginning to look like a dream rather than a reality. But just because these areas are no good for opener if your willing to travel than there is still hope.

My quest with this tread is to provide people with an alternative in regards to locations to fish the opener.

So my question to all is which lakes in your area have fishable ice.

--qualifications--
Lake has to fishable/accessible
Decent to fish
Hold fish which are in season
And have to be in Ontario
( would be good if you could provide approximate distance from Toronto as most people know where that is and can relate to the expected travel time)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- it doesn't have to be your secret honey hole I know the importance of secrecy but a good lake that can provide us soft water saps to still have the ability to be excited for Jan 1st.

I hope we get this thread moving so we can manifest some sanity to this weather madness!

To all merry christmas happy new years and mist importantly TIGHT LINES!

Kenora - 1900kms, 22 hours, lots of fishable ice on several lakes, almost everything in season (lake trout opens Jan.1).
Hope this helps ;D

Nestor Falls(just south of Kenora) Drove a truck out on Sabaskong Bay on Lake of the Woods friday. Caught a ton of perch, a limit of crappies, and a small mix of walleye, pike and even a ciscoe....Wasn`t a bad way to kill 4 hours.. ;D

Opener?  ???  I think everything we (FMZ 18) can catch in the winter is already open isn't it?

Great idea with this post...although I think most of us south eastern ontario guys would have quite a drive to hit ice  :'(

Does the fish counter at Sobeys qualify?  It has ice, the fish  might even be seasoned they been there so long and it's not too far of a drive.  I'm sure the manager won't mind if you bring in a short rod, as long as you don't try and snag the workers.   ;D

we are just starting to ice over in the ottawa area .. im not sure if you wish to make this drive .. but hey .. its icefishing.
lakes up in the gatineau hills of Quebec were iced over with a skim about a week and a half ago ... to my surprise ... about a 1/4 of an inch all across ... and thats just about a 30 minute drive north of ottawa.  Higher elevations give you colder temps ... and ice.  I fished that lake from a dock ... using my flasher and pulled in some pretty nice fish.
Temps are dipping up here at night .. so it wont be long.  Give sheltered bays a good hard look ... and keep asking ...and i will update if anyone is interested ... my first ice fishing excursion should be just after christmas ... which is very late this year for us.

cheers ... d-mo

Lol! Okay so the season is open.. I can honestly say I thought it opened Jan 1st I have always started my ice season on that date. T :-\ guess I have been cheating my self on some good days.

Anyways..
I'm happy with the amount of feedback of this post let's keep it coming.
I knew the weather was warm in my area, I had no idea that so much of southern and central ontario was still to mild I figured the kawarthas would be iced and surely Ottawa by now. Oh well I guess it's going to be a long drive for me once I'm prepped to go fishing. ( since I thought I had to wait for the new year haha)
Well let's hope for a cold snap.

Here's a funny story.. Yesterday I went to a local park in my neighborhood to check the ice thickness. Since I knew at the ponds deepest point was about 5 feet I decided to chance walking on the ice. First step on the Ice crack crack crack.. This doesn't sound good oh well I talked my self into walking across the pond. I'm determined to do it so I start shuffling crack crack crack as I go I make it half way and just as I say to myself hey here bark is as bad as her bite. Crash I go thru. Waist deep wow it was cold not doing that again anyways learned the hard way that the ice is an inch and a half lmao..

Icejunky: Do you know where this memeber plans on fishing?
Im in the Ottawa area, and its been VERY warm and rainy here. The rideau river has just iced over finally, but I would say its FAR from good ice, an on the pond at my parents where I trap minnows only had a at most an inch of ice when I checked today

But with that said, it cant be far off now!

There is decent ice on the small lakes in the Madawaska Highlands....I was out Monday and again today....speckles....n ot biting today although we saw them swimming by our jigs, but got 5 Monday.

1" ice Monday...3" as of this morning....and making ice....some of the bigger lakes need another 3 to 4 nites of cold weather.

Stay away from creeks and beaverhouses, you'll be ok....

Nice to be out again, although last year we were out first week of December.

After Xmas, ice should be great as they are calling for some cool weather...

sounds like i will be making a visit up to the madawaska hilands after x-mas .. thanks much for the report ..
im pretty sure petrie is not fishable at the present time .. however, give it a few more days with temps of minus 8 to minus 12 at night and it should have a good few inches.
i will run down there either today or tomorrow and give you guys a report ... as its only a few short kms from home .. and my fishing hole if i dont feel like driving anywhere.

cheers ...d-mo

In zone 8 many of are smaller lakes are safe to fish on and walleye, bass, pike, perch, sunfish, rainbow and splake are open.Brookies and lakers are open in select areas.Huts are starting to move out to Sutton bay but lake Temiskaming is still open.No idea what Lake Abitibi is like
Travel is about 7hrs from Ottawa and 6hrs from Toronto to New Liskard.
There is nothing better than the smile on a childs face when they see the fish come up through the hole.

Well back from a short excursion down to the ottawa river today ..and im happy to say i saw a few old ... well young really compared to me ...icefishers on the ice today.  So as one of our previous posters said  ... let the games begin.
There was a good 4 inches of ice on this backbay.
Im planning to hit the "Mad" tomorrow with a buddy .. the truck is lightly packed ... and the ice 55 is charging ...
