Line for Walleye Reels
« on: Nov 29, 2011, 11:48 AM »
Going to pick up a few walleye rods and reels in the next two weeks. What type of line is everyone using on their walleye rods? The owner of my local bait shop mentioned 8-10 lb flourocarbons are pretty popular!

It's a fine line between fishing & sitting on the ice like an idiot

Your experience may differ but I've found precious little use for lines over 6# for eyes.  Much of your choice will depend on what conditions you usually fish.  Most likely, any good quality line will do if you take reasonably good care of it.  Avoid twisting, store it out of sunlight, etc.  I suppose everyone has their preference, but mine currently is 5# Stren Magnathin.  Light green in color, very thin diameter - it matches the conditions I fish nicely.  The downside is that it's not overly durable and I often change it half way through the season.  Knowing and staying within a line's limitations is half the battle.  I wish I could find about 10 miles more of it...

I started using DAM Tectan exclusively last year & it's the best mono I've ever found for low memory / low twist.
I like the 7.3#, but you could go down to the 6.4# or even the 5.1# if you're in real clear water. Strong stuff.
(comes in strange #test due to being from Europe - had to convert to #'s)
*BTW - FishUSA carries it.  ;)
If you ever get hit with a bucket of fish, be sure to close your eyes. ;)

On my jigging rods I use 8lb Maxima Ultragreen, and on my dead sticks I use 10 - 12lb Maxima Ultragreen with the spool laying directly on the ice. I guess it depends on the average size of the walleye that your fishing for.

call me crazy, but I use 4 lb lindy ice.  Haven't had to test it on a big fish yet, but 18-23 inchers are common

I hooked into 8lb pike on 4lb, it's all I've used in the past... Biggest eye off a jigging rod is 5lbs.

I did put 6lb berkley fluro ice on it this year, like to get into those big ol' Fort Peck eyes a time or two this year.

FLUOROCARBON. Lots of choices out there. 6-8lb. Berkley pro grade and P-line are two that i have used with great success.

Berkley fluro ice stinks, I'm peeling that stuff off, I can't stand it, coily with a terrible memory.
