Down-sizing
« on: Feb 12, 2012, 04:58 PM »
I have a question for those of you who have been ice fishing for alot longer than me. I was watching a guide for wally north and east of us and he suggested down sizing tackle for walleyes in mid winter, anyone tried this or anyone do this? Does this work around southeast wyoming?

The best action ive had the last 2 trips i started with a buckshot jigging spoon tipped with a minnow had them follwing it up but wouldnt hit-  swapped to a small jigging rap tipped with a minnow head and caught 2 eater size walleyes and lost one more in the hole.  in this instance downsizing worked.

I thinks it all about "matching the hatch" The other day I kept getting bit on one of my tip-ups so I would start jigging in that hole with a jig tipped with a minnow and they didnt want anything to do with it. Rig the tipup back up and set it seconds later  Kinda crazy

I too think it all depends on the situation.  I think starting out big and aggressive is best... but if I get turned down on the flasher that is the first thing I'll try is something smaller.

I think size is actually much more important than color.

I caught a walleye with a 3" rap today and had more chasing it. So I think it's more of what the fish want that day

I have had too small of a presentation on before (small jig and small minnow) and had walleyes pass right by it on the Aqua vu and had to upsize to get bit.

Been having great luck with a 1/16 flying rattle spoon with a small minnow no bigger than  one and a half inch. interesting thing is the smaller walleyes throw the spoon when they hit the ice and  the larger ones are hooked quite solid.

You can't go wrong with a wide gap hook #4 and a couple of beads above it and # 7 split shot or 2 12-18" above the bait. This setup works good with medium sized bait.
