When we were going to school in Helena Hauser and Canyon Ferry usually offered up some pretty good Ling fishing at night.  Usually stuck to the North End of Ferry and the Black/White Sandy areas on Hauser.  chunk of Sucker on the bottom with Tip Up's was ususally my go to.

Seeing that you are from Bozeman, Hyalite is actually much better at night that during the daylight hours.

Lake Mary Ronan for salmon at night.  There was a newspaper article written a couple years ago about how the salmon are more active at night when attracted with lights.  Never tried it but have heard it can be good action.

Make sure you check regulations.  I believe in the summer LMR is closed from midnight til 3 a.m.

It still is according this this year's regs.  March 1 it changes, open 24 hours a day.  But then it will be closed for anyfishing except perch.

Buy a floating fish light.  I think I picked mine up at KMart one year on a clearance sale for 5 bucks.  It's nothing more than a round automotive headlight and a Styrofoam casing with wires that run up to battery clips.  Pretty simple.  I stayed out on LMR last year over night and fished until midnight, took my rods and fish out of the shack and went to sleep until just after 0300 and then dropped the lines in again.  It worked great!  Got my limit of salmon in just over an hour and if I dropped to the bottom I was into the perch.

If you choose Hyalite I wouldn't recommend lighting the whole...Instead use a glow in the dark jig and recharge the paint every 10-15 minutes with your lantern or other light source you are using.  Hyalite is often better in the night than in the day...

If you get up to the Kalispell area, I see a lot of guys fishing McWinnegar Slough at night for Crappie.

Has anyone tried fishing with lights for ling?  I have one of those 12V submersible lights that put out the green light... Just moved to Helena recently and am wondering if it'd be fun to try the light for ling fishing once Hauser or N. CF freeze up better.

The bite there is usually the first few hours after it gets dark. You almost have to have a flasher because they are suspended and come in at different depths on different days. So if you go bring a pop-up and a heater and don't forget a flasher or something similar to help you locate them in the water column. They are usually fairly close to where you access it from as well. You will see the other guys out there most nights and that will at least tell you where to set up.

i have tried fishing all night lots of times,i have a floating light, but never seem to do that well ,in georgetown i have caught trout at night but usually slower than during the day. i fished lake mary last year all night, except for the 3 hour period, twice and didnt catch anything, although the first night we had a group of three set up right next to us and catch quite a few salmon and some nice ones.. the only species i have done well on at night is ling, and i didnt use the light when fishing for them, and all of the ling i have caught through the ice were on a tip-up. i still give it a try every now and then and it is amazing to see all the little water bugs that collect at your hole when you have a light shining down it.

Went out night fishing tonight.  We got on the the ice with rods in the water at 1800 and off the ice in the truck @ 2000.  We iced 10-15 cutthroats with the kids and missed or lost as many more.  The new Eskimo FatFish 949i worked great as all 4 of us (2 adults and a 3.5yo and a 1.5yo) were able to fish 2 holes very comfortably with lots of room for the kids to move around and not fall in the holes.  Brought the sunflower heater but never hooked it up as the Coleman lantern kept the inside of the hut a very comfortable temperature.

we kill them at night  on george town.  used to use lights but did just as well with glow jigs.  if you use lights fish just outside the "halo" or lit column

Used to fish Hauser and LMR back in the late 80's before the midnite to 3 am restriction and the salmon used to jump in the boat. We used to limit out in an hour or two. The good old days.

Might try taking some snowmobiles into the lakes in the Big hole for some ling...seems decent fishing in the summer months but never tried them in the winter.
