Been looking for a good propane heater for the ice shack. Any suggestions as what to or what not to get!

Mr. heater and a hose with a 3#-5# tank. Mine has been abused, busted up and ran for hundreds of hours and still works.

I third the Mr Heater! I have two and the older of the two has taken a severe beating over the years and still runs great. You can actually roast hot dogs in front them they get so hot if you want. I have done it on more than one occasion.

And the nice thing is you can buy whatever size suits your needs..........Current ly I've got the smallest and thinking about stepping up to the next size for those all nighters on the ice........

I've had good luck with my buddy heater.  It's quiet and I can place the back against the wall of my shack
and I don't have to worry about burning up.  Plus the built in ignitor works great, so no looking for a lighter or matches.
 ;)  Just my 2 cents.

My works great too. I also like the O2 sensor that will shut the heater off if you start using all the O2 in your shanty. Nice safety feature.

Yeah......that is a good feature krankbait.  Much better than the "my lighter won't light my cigarette" feature that I used last year..........not impressed with that one.....LOL

My two are a Mr Heater that is so old it doesn't have a type it is just called a Mr Heater, I got it around 10 years ago when my youngest was just born to keep the tent warm enough for a baby when I was winter camping. My other one is newer and it is called a Portable Buddy by Mr Heater. All the Buddy heaters are made by that same original Mr Heater company. Anyway I run those little green cylinders in both rather than a 5 gallon tank because I pull my sled by hand and don't have room for something that big. I bring two green canisters with me and I can run either of my heaters from zero dark thirty in the morning until I go home at night and I have never gone through both canisters in one day. I get the canisters at Walmart for $5 for two(they come in little packs of two). I have a three man popup that it will keep warm enough to roast me out of it all day long so usually I put it up on my small bait cooler so it doesn't turn the ice to water around it and I run it on low off and on all day depending on the outside temps.

Thanks for the info!  I am going to be looking for one around here today.  I have young ones too and I don't want them to be too chilly and take the fun out of it for them.

I run the Mr. Heater Big Buddy in my QuickFish 3. http://www.mrheater.com/product.aspx?catid=41&id=116
I have a 15' hose that runs to a 20# Cylinder - 5 Gallon Bottle that sits outside the shack. The heater keeps the shack toasty without bein hot itself. I bought it for $139 or so. The 20# tank can last me 4-5 days of continous use. Best heater for my dollar.

I usually figure about 6 hours to a 1 pound cylinder.  Started refilling the small ones out of a 20# tank.
Works pretty good, put the small tanks in the freezer for about 10 minutes prior to filling and the large tank in a warm
area, and the temperature difference helps to get them full.  Have weighed them afterwards and they're almost perfect.
