Tip-Ups, Whats the difference?
« on: Feb 07, 2005, 06:15 PM »
Hey guys,
I'm in the market for my first tip-up. I just finished reading all the posts on everybody's favorite tip-up brands. But my question is what are the differences. I see round tip-ups, wooden straight tip-ups and even something called the Wind tip-up. I do mostly walleye and perch fishing. What tip up is best for me?

I'm in Ontario, Canada so thats a big of a hike. I will check the Local Wal-mart and see what they carry. All the Bait shops in my area are locked up tight. My area is pretty much closed to winter fishing. I have looked in Canadian Tires stores but i was wondering if the Walmart and CT stores sold lower quality then your average fishing store?. thanx for the advice

I love Ht Polar tipups, they are extremely durable and of really high quality. They cost around 15 dollars, and my dad still uses the ones he had since the 80s. They still work just as well as the first day he used them. You can find them at places like Dick's sporting goods and Gander's Mt., as well as bait shops.  Make sure you know how to rig a tipup properly...

The round tipups keep snow out of your holes and prevent the hole from freeszing when it is not too cold outside.
The wooden tipups, like the Heritage Lakers, are of a somewhat higher quality, but are much more expensive.
The Windlass tipups catch the breeze and use it to jig you bait up and down.
I use the HT Polar tipups, they are plastic and are like a board that spans the top of the hole. They are my favorite, and are probably your best bet for beginning on walleye.
Read up on the Walleye forum to learn about what rigs you should use, and what baits.
For, perch, I would personally jig, but you can use tipups, I would use the HT Polars as well.
Private Message me if you want more info on them... ;)
Good Luck, and Tight Lines! :)

I have three tip ups. An HT polar therm (which is a round, stationary tip up), a small econo HT tip up which sits upright and is wood, and an HT windlass tipup. The windlass is a great tip up and probably gets more flags than any of my others. If you use HT vinyl coated tip up line, you won't have any freeze up problems. Even my little econo tip up has a really smooth spool that plays out line with basically no drag. The polar therm seems to have a little more drag than the others but it works fine.

Heritage Laker is a nice tip-up.(well built) Its easy to put up & take down and you will never have to buy tips again.

Pauger said it all!
If I was in the market for my first tip ups I would deffinately save my pennies up and buy the Heritage Lakers. With a little care you will never need to buy another.
Many of us have had about every style out there and I am sure you will find they will never go back to others after useing the Heritage. At $18-20 each, you can't go wrong.
If I agreed with you we would both be wrong!

FISH307.com in Lake George carries all the Heritage Laker stuff and does a deal if you buy 5 or ten at a 10 with or with out line. Think they are around $18.50 each with out line.
Great guys to deal with and they could even be doing some sales at this point. Won't hurt to ask.

I think fish307.com has them. But I think the fishusa site is cheaper. Do not get the nor'easters. The flag system sucks. I have 30 Heritage Lakers and I love them.
