Ice shack theft?
« on: Sep 20, 2014, 12:16 AM »
Hey guys new to the site.  I am putting an ice shack on the north end of last mountain this season(Lewis creek) and was wondering if there has been a lot of break ins of shacks on the lake?  I was hoping I could leave auger and gear in shack so I could rip up there on sled and not have to bring anything other than beverages.

Ounce of prevention ...Leave it and they will come ...and take your stuff. Instead of Fort Knox'n your shack ...invest in a good auger mount and aftermarket add ons  for your other gear ...good sled and cover along with a tow bar/hitch . Before long you'll have a slicked out rig customized to your needs and liking.

I take EVERYTHING with me, even my seats. I also made my shack with big windows so anyone can see in and see that there's nothing to steal. So far I've been lucky. ;D

Leave it empty. Take a chance of losing your gear and having to try to find new in the middle of the season? NOT worth it. Ice shacks are quick and easy hits, with a fast market for sales of the equipment. Take it with you.

My philosophy is if you ask that question, you probably already know the answer!!

LEAVE NOTHING IN IT THAT YOU WOULDN'T MIND GIVING AWAY!!!

Expensive, untraceable ice fishing gear in a remote, pitch dark, unsupervised location = open invitation for it to grow legs!!

I learned a long time ago that leaving anything out on the ice is a bad idea. It's not the dudes out fishing you worry about, it's the passers-by on sleds, trucks or ATV's.

My buddies and I had a shack out on Pewaukee lake in SE Wis, we got hammered one night and got lazy with our crap. Sure enough, broken into when we came back the next day. We lost 2 Vexilars, a few jig rods and a bunch of Beaver Dam flags. Saving grace? Dude left tracks back to the public launch, a public launch with a security camera on the Pay Station roof. We narrowed down the time and the local cops went through the video and found dude's truck plate #. He and two buddies weren't fishermen, they were just cruisers. Cruisers who faced felony burglary charges.

best not to risk it. had an auger, heater and an axe stolen out on blackstrap when my shack was up in shanty town. since then I gave up on blackstrap and take all my gear with me when I leave.

If it can be stolen it will.  2 years ago somebody drove off with a member's wheel house shanty. Unless stealing it is more pain in the ass than it's worth don't leave anything behind.
